Tony Buzbee sued by former client for large chunk of settlement
Jay Z is not the only one that focuses on a lawyer Tony Buzbee in court – a former client claims Buzbee acted more as his loan shark than as his attorney in a personal injury case.
Immediately after Jay-Z’s blistering attack on Buzbee, Matthew Ray Thompson Jr. is now targeting him… and filing a federal lawsuit against his ex-lawyer on Monday. According to the documents, obtained by TMZ, Thompson says he was injured in July 2023 while working as a deckhand on a barge ferry in the Houston Ship Channel.
He says he retained Buzbee, who filed a lawsuit on his behalf in November 2023, leading to automatic payments to Thompson — from his employer — while his lawsuit was pending.
But in the lawsuit, Thompson claims those payments were made directly to Buzbee’s firm, and then Buzbee made payouts to him… with one very expensive catch.
Thompson claims that Buzbee lent him his own money, and to make matters worse, he also charged him high interest. He claims Buzbee withheld more than 60% of the money he was owed – and he claims Buzbee also has a representative who has taken this step with other clients.

While Buzbee’s former client makes no reference to it Diddy or Jay-Z by name, Thompson paints a picture of Buzbee that resembles the claims Jay made on Sunday in his damning statement.
Thompson says, “Buzbee has gotten rich by milking settlements at the threat of negative attention from people whose livelihoods depend on their public reputation.”
We reached out to Buzbee for comment, but have not heard back yet.
