According to port data, Cozumel almost received 5 million visitors in 2024 alone – an extraordinary number for an island with just over 30 inhabitants 100,000 inhabitants. While the influx has boosted local businesses and created thousands of tourism-related jobs, it has also raised concerns about sustainability, overtourism and pressure on infrastructure.
Local residents and environmentalists have expressed growing concerns about coral reef degradation, waste management and traffic congestion in the island’s small center. Still, Cozumel remains a perfect Caribbean escape for many visitors.

A regional picture of overtourism
The Index of tourism density in Latin America paints a broader picture of the uneven growth of tourism in the region. While destinations like Cozumel, TulumAnd Punta Cana reach extreme numbers of visitors per capita, such as large urban centers Bogota, LimaAnd Buenos Aires receive relatively few tourists compared to their population: less than three visitors per inhabitant.
The study authors note that these differences underscore the need for this sustainable tourism planningespecially in small coastal communities that are almost entirely dependent on tourism income. As Latin America continues to attract global attention for its natural beauty and cultural diversity, striking a balance between growth and conservation will be critical to maintaining both visitor satisfaction and residents’ quality of life.
