The ‘Desperate Housewives’ reboot would likely be a prequel, says Creator
Marc Cherry, the creator of ‘Desperate Housewives’, is open to exploring a different era of Wisteria Lane.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Cherry presented his idea for a prequel to the hit ABC series starring Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria.
“I probably would have wanted to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade,” Cherry told the publication. “Because the character I miss most from writing is actually Wisteria Lane. That was the best playground anyone ever had in the history of television, because we owned the entire street. I know that street like the back of my hand. If someone makes a commercial on that street, I know it immediately, because I know all those houses, I know the geography. It was such a fun place to write for. And there are times when I say, ‘You know what? I wonder if I could write Wisteria Lane in 1966. ”
Cherry, who also created the series “Devious Maids” and “Why Women Kill,” estimates that “about 70,000 people” have asked him about a “Desperate Housewives” reboot. He added, “The truth is, I have a few ideas on how to do it.”
However, the ‘Desperate Housewives’ creator would only pursue a reboot if “things still need to be said.” “If you do a reboot, you have to have a very good artistic reason for it,” he explained. “And at some point I’m going to sit down with someone and say, ‘Okay, let’s talk about whether there’s a good enough ‘why’ to do it.'”
“Desperate Housewives” follows four women – Susan Mayer (Hatcher), Lynette Scavo (Huffman), Bree Van de Kamp (Cross) and Gabrielle Solis (Longoria) – who discover dark secrets in their seemingly idyllic suburb after their friend and neighbor, Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong), dies by suicide. The drama series, which ran on ABC from 2004 to 2012, won seven Primetime Emmys and three Golden Globes.
