The creator of Tell Me Lies is breaking the silence on the show ending after season 3
Creator Meaghan Oppenheimer broke her silence assuming that season 3 of Tell me lies is the last of the show.
“In terms of future seasons, it’s impossible to really know at this point,” Oppenheimer said exclusively We weekly before the Tuesday, January 13 premiere of the hit Hulu series. “I certainly always thought that was always more or less the ending I had in mind.”
Oppenheimer did not rule out a return, adding: “But you never know what’s going to happen in the future. But there’s definitely a feeling that I didn’t want to leave anything hanging this season. Basically, I wanted to please everyone.”
Hulu has not yet announced whether there are plans to continue Tell me lies beyond the coming season. Based on Carola Loving‘s novel of the same name, Tell me lies follows the messy relationship between students Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White). Their troubled love affair ultimately lasts eight years, and everyone around them is affected by Lucy and Stephen’s ups and downs.
The first season, which premiered in 2022, drew quite a bit from Lovering’s book, but the ending changed the script by expanding the toxicity between Lucy and Stephen so the show could run for even more episodes.
Season 2 upped the stakes after Lucy and Stephen’s initial rift by having them reconcile in both the past and current timelines while having relationships with other people.

Disney/Josh StringerThe drama escalated when Lucy and Stephen got back together at university – and he discovered she had previously hooked up with his boyfriend Evan (Branden Cook). He seemed to take the news well, until Tell me lies jumped to the present during Evan’s wedding to Lucy’s friend Bree (Cat Missal). No one could find Stephen when Cat received a voice message from Evan confessing to cheating on her with Lucy.
Season 3 picks up immediately after Cat finds out that Lucy has been betrayed. It also remains to be seen whether Lucy will break things off with Stephen for good in the current timeline.

“I’ve always had a sense of where they are in 2015, what their dynamics are and what secrets everyone is carrying. Once you at least know what people know and what they don’t know, it gives you a lot of room to play,” she noted in 2024. “But the way we built it is we definitely put the 2008 storyline in the room first. We kind of mapped out the whole season and then we made 2015 as its own thing done.”
Oppenheimer continued: “But I knew where I wanted to end the season in 2015. I knew where it had to go.”
After Tell me lies was renewed for a third season, Oppenheimer signed an overall deal with 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
“Meaghan has helmed Tell Me Lies for two intensely addictive seasons that have fueled an incredible wave of obsessive fan and social conversations,” 20th Television President Karey Burke said in a December 2024 statement. “We are thrilled to have her officially in the studio and at the helm of another dramatic season.”
New episodes of Tell me lies airs Tuesday on Hulu.
