Steph Curry wins the first Olympic gold medal as Team USA defeats France
Stefan Curry won its first-ever Olympic gold medal when the U.S. men’s basketball team defeated France at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Curry lifted Team USA to a 98-87 victory against France in the men’s basketball final at Bercy Arena on Saturday, August 10, scoring four three-pointers with minutes remaining. The four-time NBA champion, 36, finished with 24 points and five assists.
While Curry struggled with his shot at the beginning of the final, he said The Guardian on Saturday that finally “the rhythm, the avalanche came.” The 2024 Paris Games will mark Curry’s first, and likely only, Olympics.
“At that moment your mind goes blank. You don’t really worry about the setting or the scenario or anything, it’s just a chance,” Curry shared The New York Times of his three after the match. “Luckily that went in, it calmed us down, and then it’s just rhythm and flow and confidence and that’s it.”
This victory marks the fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal for the U.S. men’s basketball team. For Lebron James, who finished with 14 points, six rebounds and 10 assists, it was his fourth Olympic medal. In the meantime, Kevin Durant became the first male athlete from any team sport to win four gold medals. Both Durant and Devin Boeker scored 15 points.
“It’s kind of hard to put into words – twice,” said Booker, a two-time gold medalist The New York Times follow the game. “This experience was completely different from the first. I’m not taking anything away from that, but the atmosphere, with Steph and LeBron obviously joining us, this experience is as good as any experience in my life.
Team USA’s gold medal win comes after a near upset semifinal match against Serbia. The Americans won a 95-91 victory by the skin of their teeth on Thursday, August 8.
Serbia led for most of the game – at one point by as many as 13 points – but Team USA was able to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Lebron James scored a triple-double (16 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists), while Curry scored 36 points with nine threes.
“I have to do it the hard way. We preached that throughout the fourth quarter,” James said in an interview shortly after the match against Serbia. “We knew it was going to be difficult. We knew that Serbia would give us everything they had. Kudos to Serbia.”
