Spirit Halloween claps back Saturday evening live for making fun of the costume shop during a recent sketch.

After the late-night comedy series featured a segment spotlighting the Halloween store during the Season 50 premiere on Saturday, September 28, Spirit Halloween took to social media to create some subtle shade of its own.

“We’re great at bringing things back from the dead @nbcsnl,” the store says official X page captioned a photo of a costume, “Irrelevant 50-Year Old TV Show.” The package for the costume claimed it contained “dated references,” “unknown cast members” and “shrinking ratings.”

Social media users quickly took to the comments section to praise Spirit for the joke – and roast SNL in the process. “This was way funnier than their video,” one wrote, while another said: “Can you ever take their time slot?”

Saturday Night Live’s hosts and musical guests are typically the center of attention each week, but sometimes better-known faces steal the show. Tyler Cameron crashed Kim Kardashian’s hosting debut in October 2021, joining her for a Bachelor-inspired skit. “That [experience] was incredible,” the Bachelor Nation alum exclusively told Us Weekly weeks after […]

A third commenter added: “Wait, SNL still going on?? I thought that ended in the 1990s.”

Hosted by Jean SlimSaturday SNL episode didn’t stop from making Spirit the butt of the joke. A pre-recorded sketch was shown SNLs Heidi Gardner, Chloe Fineman And Michael Longfellow while employees created a mock advertisement for the retailer.

“Times may be good on Wall Street, but on Main Street, communities are struggling,” Gardner says in a voiceover. “Closed shops, shuttered businesses, empty parking lots. … When hard times come, it’s easy to feel like no one cares. But help is on the way.”

The trio claims that where others see old towns or abandoned K-Marts, they see a place where they can build their store “for six weeks and then bounce.”

“We provide vulnerable communities with the things they need most,” Fineman explains. “Wigs that give you a rash, single-use fog machines, and costumes of famous characters modified just enough to avoid a lawsuit.”

Longfellow added: “And thanks to us, the former Auto Zone, where a murder took place, is a thriving business again. … Where a murder took place.”

The skit then pokes fun at Spirit’s employees, joking that the company offers “six-week jobs for some of the hardest-hit perverts.”

The segment ends with a young girl asking Fineman for a Taylor Swift costume. “You bet,” Fineman replies, smiling as he hands her the package for “Blonde Woman Singing.”

“This isn’t Taylor Swift,” the girl says. “And neither are you,” Fineman replies with a smile as he punches her on the nose.

“Ghost Halloween. When you need us, we are there. For six weeks,” says the trio. ‘Because we’ll be gone on November 1st. And all this junk will end up in the dumpster.”

SNL promises many more major sketches in the coming months to celebrate its 50 seasons on air. The lineup of hosts in October and November includes Ariana Grande, Michael Keaton And John Mulaneywhile Stevie Nicks, Billie Eilish And Chappell Roan are among the show’s listed musical performances.
