‘Soul Man’ Sam Moore, half of Hall of Fame duo Sam and Dave, has died at the age of 89
Hold on God, Sam Moore is coming – the famous singer, who was half of the legendary soul duo Sam & Dave, has passed away.
Sam’s rep says the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer passed away Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida after post-surgery complications — though the rep didn’t say what type of surgery Sam had or when.
Sam & Dave – with singer Dave Prater — formed in the 1960s and released a string of iconic hits, including “Soul Man,” “Hold On I’m Coming” and “I Thank You.” From the beginning, Sam had quite a reputation in the music world.
He was discovered by none other than while singing in church Sam Cookewho thought Moore would be a great gospel singer, but when he saw another soul music icon, Jackie Wilsonmade him jump into pop music instead.
Sam met Dave at a talent show at a South Florida nightclub, and Atlantic Records executives discovered the duo in 1965… and the rest is rock & roll history.
They broke up in 1970, but their music catalog took a huge hit in the arm Then Aykroyd And John Belushi covered “Soul Man” as the Blues Brothers on ‘SNL’ in the ’70s.
Sam opened up about his struggle with heroin addiction after his marriage Joyce McRae in 1982, and she eventually helped him get clean and prosper in a solo career. He was a White House favorite and performed for six presidents at various events. He even performed with Bill Clinton in honor of Aykroyd’s 50th birthday.
As a solo artist, Sam collaborated with Bruce Springsteen, Billy Preston, Jon Bon Jovi and much more.
Sam and Dave were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
Sam was 89. He survived Joycetheir daughter and a granddaughter.
