Sora for Android saw nearly half a million installs on its first day

Sora’s Android launch is off to a promising start. In its first day on the Google Play Store, ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s AI video app saw an estimated 470,000 downloads in the markets where it was available, according to new estimates from the app intelligence provider App figures.

That makes the Android launch more than four times the size of the iOS launch, with 327% more installs (360,000) – but the company notes that this isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison.

On iOS, Sora was only available in the US and Canada, and by invitation only.

However, Sora on Android is available in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, and OpenAI has dropped the invite requirement end of October for its top markets.

The app was a breakout hit after its debut, despite its previous exclusive status. The iOS app was installed over a million times within its first week and quickly rose to the top of the App Store. Today, the app still ranks fourth in the US App Store’s iPhone Top Free Charts.

With Sora, users use AI to create videos using prompts. These videos can also feature the users and their friends animated by AI, through a feature known as Cameos. Videos are scrollable in a TikTok-like vertical feed, so you can see what other people are creating with the technology.

Appfigures also revised its previous estimates for day one iOS downloads of the Sora app. Originally, the models said the app saw around 56,000 downloads on day one. Now that more time has passed, the model can more accurately predict that this number was closer to 110,000, of which about 69,300 were US installations.

By comparison, the Sora Android app saw around 296,000 US installs, out of a total of 470,000, indicating that there is still interest in the AI video maker even after the initial iOS launch rumors died down.

Sora also competes with Meta AI, which today released its mobile app for European users, following its earlier US debut.
