Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers of ‘smoke’. All nine episodes now stream on Apple TV+.

In “Smoke”, Taron Egerton Dave, a arson that is also a serial arsonist. Dave not only thinks he is rather smart because he believes that he is too smart for everyone, but he has also convinced himself that he is really hot.

But that all comes to an explosive unveiling when he was arrested and questioned by Michelle, a war veteran who was played Detective by Jenee Smollett.

While Dave looks in the mirror in the interrogation room, his physical appearance slowly changes from a colossal hot blonde to a balding man with a belly.

“I think the theme of our show is that we all wear masks to a certain extent,” says Smollett. “They are people how they present themselves to be versus who they really are. It is in silence when they are sitting on the couch and nobody is around and you look in the mirror and there is the distance you have to cover between that mask and who you are. For some it is very great.”

Writer and series -maker Dennis Lehane pasted “Smoke” from “Firebug”, a podcast who described the story of John Orr, a Glendale fire -burner and arson researcher, in the 1980s and 1990s. One fire in a hardware trade resulted in the death of four people.

In ‘Smoke’ the sexual tension between Dave and Michelle cannot be denied. However, it is about to sleep together exactly where Michelle was working towards.

“It is a cat and mouse game. Part of what I do is that I know that he is attracted to me, and I know I need something from him, so I am going to feed his ego to get what I need to disarm him, to make him feel relaxed and to give him the feeling that I am not a threat and I am not in the research, says Smollett. “I have to make him believe it is a possibility to disarm him so that he can’t see me coming.”

Michelle has secrets himself. Her past includes a mother who left her in a motel fire before death. She had an affair with her old boss, Steven (Rafe Spall), who was in charge of the investigation of the alleged arson of Dave.

Towards the end of the series, Steven loses his cool when Michelle rejects his progress to reinvent their romance. When Steven Michelle grabs her arm, her hunter instinct starts and delivers a slap in his throat that makes him suffocate and stitched. Instead of trying to save him, Michelle is about Steven and sees him die. Michelle Panics and tries to hide her involvement in his death by set fire to his corpse and the house.

“She goes to survival mode,” says Smollett. “I think that is exactly what she did. She had surgery in some of her brain that is only about survival. In her thoughts I don’t think she thinks she killed him. She allowed this to perspire this. I think she chose herself for him.”

The series ends with the arrest of Dave, but not before he takes Michelle on a fast driving ride through a forest fire where he started.

“The majority of the fire is real. Yes, there is a number of CGI where they fill the empty spots and so, but they built a forest in a sound phase and had plaster everywhere. We were surrounded by fire.”

The order was shot for a week, whereby each take is limited to a very short time. “It was frightening in the best way,” she says. “As an actor it makes your work just so much easier to have the special effects practical. You feel the heat, your sweat, your adrenaline rushes you. And there are all these different elements. The car has to crash. I literally shoot bullets and empty three magazines each.”

Although a second season has not been announced, Smollett hopes that the series will continue because she would like to see how Michelle is trying to get away. “Dennis did not tell me what his plans are completely,” she says. “He gave me a few hints, but I think she grew up with survival and she is a very smart animal. I think she knows the system in which she works. Unfortunately, she is not the only one, nor is she the first to manipulate the system.”
