SkyShowtime, Secuoya Studios and Stellarmedia to Roll on ‘Shades’

SkyShowtime confirmed Friday that production is underway on “Shades” (“Matices”), the new original series in Spain, created in collaboration with Secouya Studios and Stellarmedia and featuring a Spanish star cast internationally known for its involvement in major Spanish series and films.

The new series, which will be shot in Zamora, Madrid and the Canary Islands, stars Maxi Iglesias (“Valeria”), Enrique Arce (“Money Heist”), Hovik Keuchkerian (“Reina Roja”) and Juana Acosta (“La templanza “)

There are also Fariba Sheikhan (“The Unit”), Miriam Giovanelli (“Nacho”), Eusebio Poncela (“Merlí. Sapere aude”), Raúl Prieto (“The Snow Girl”), Luis Tosar (“Cell 211”) and Elsa Pataky (“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”).

SkyShowtime offers other Spanish titles in Spain described as SkyShowtime Originals, such as ViX/The Mediapro Studio production “Las Pelotaris 1926.” However, the upcoming SkyShowtime Original series ‘Shades’ is the second original to be commissioned in Spain, following ‘Mamen Mayo’, which was announced in early June, and a comedy/family drama produced by Nostromo Pictures in association with SkyShowtime.

A psychological thriller, but with a playful element in line with lighter crime setups of ensemble cast mysteries such as the ‘Knives Out’ franchise. “Shades” begins with a celebrated and charismatic psychiatrist gathering six of his patients in a place far from anywhere. winery to complete their treatment. Even among the most complex and difficult patients, his famous method has a high success rate.

But – of course – “after an unusual ceremonial tasting, an unexpected twist takes place with a fateful ending. After the arrival of an intuitive police lieutenant who takes over the case, the truth about the patients’ traumas comes to light,” the synopsis reads.

“Shades” is described in production terms as a result of a collaboration between Secuoya Studios and Stellarmedia and in association with SkyShowtime and is directed by Sergio Cánovas of Stellarmedia (“Girls Night Out”, “The Strand”). Cánovas also serves as creator and executive producer, along with Javier Naya, Alex Meriweather and María García-Castrillón.

With ex-Netflix director Juan Mayne named regional content director for Spain and Portugal in October 2023, ‘Shades’ appears to be just one part of an ongoing build of locally commissioned Spanish SkyShowtime Originals at the service.

“Mamen Mayo” and “Pelotaris 1926” were just “the tip of the iceberg” in terms of local content investment in Spain, SkyShowtime Chief Content Officer Kai Finke said during a Conecta Fiction keynote in June.

“We understand that addressing local programming is absolutely critical to successfully operating streaming services in our region and in Europe. We are working on many more projects right now,” Finke added at Conecta Fiction. “You can certainly expect to see an increasing number of submissions in the local language.”
