Rise of a genius, taken over by Fremantle

Fremantle has acquired global distribution rights to ‘Mozart: Rise of a Genius’, a three-part docudrama from 72 Films. The show offers an in-depth exploration of the life and legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The series premieres on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on September 16. Variety debuts below with an exclusive clip.

“The series explores the tragically short but profoundly impactful 35 years of the musical prodigy who revolutionized the music world,” a statement said. “Characterized by intrigue, rivalry and scandal, Mozart’s story is told through a masterful blend of interviews, rich dramatic reenactments and electrifying live orchestral performances. Set against the backdrop of a thriving European culture, the series charts his journey from high society darling to rebellious outsider.

The show is filmed on location at historic sites – including theatres, palaces and Mozart’s houses – in Vienna and Hungary. The series also features performances by the Hungarian Studio Orchestra, filmed exclusively for the production, which provides the soundtrack.

The series features contributions from historians, musicologists and classical music enthusiasts, including Stephen Fry, Sheila Hancock, Richard E. Grant, Adjoa Andoh, Karla Crome, Robert Greenberg, Jane Glover, Flora Willson, David McVicar, Edward Gardner, Lucy Crowe and Golda Schultz.

Jens Richter, CEO, Commercial and International, Fremantle, said: “’Mozart: Rise of a Genius’ is a powerful series that celebrates the brilliance of Mozart and illuminates the complex, fascinating world he navigated during his lifetime. We are delighted to be working again with 72 Films and the BBC to share this remarkable story with our partners and their audiences, who will get a fresh perspective on this legendary figure.”

Mark Bell, editor-in-chief of BBC Arts, said: “Mozart’s story is incredibly dramatic, his character is contradictory, his end is premature and sad, and his compositions changed the direction of classical music. 72 Films has brought him to life in a way that is ambitious, compelling and enlightening. I am sure BBC audiences will be excited about this special series.”

“Mozart: Rise of a Genius” is produced by 72 Films for BBC2. David Glover, Rob Coldstream and Nick Holt are executive producers for 72 Films. The series producer is Melanie Fall and the series director is Alice Smith.
