Rick and Morty EP about how James Gunn, Zack Snyder agreed with host star

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers of “Rick and Morty” season 8, episode 7, “Ricker Than Fiction”, which was broadcast on adult swimming on Sunday 6 July.

DC Studios CEO James Gunn and fellow filmmaker Zack Snyder published surprise performances in this week of “Rick and Morty”, borrowed their voices to host star as exaggerated versions of themselves.

“They were good sports,” said “Rick and Morty” Exec producer Scott Marderer. “Both boys implied a bit that this is the show they look at when they have downtime. So they were very happy to be part of the world, and there was no pushback or brushing. If there was anything, they laughed at everything we threw at them.

Gunn in particular was framed as a villain in episode 7 of season 8, “Ricker Than Fiction.” Written by Rob Schrab, the episode with Rick and Morty does not start with the creative direction of their favorite film franchise, “Maximum Velocitree.” So they go to the Warner Bros. Lot – and more specifically they confront Gunn (the director and producer of “maximum velocitree”). If they are not satisfied with Gunn’s reaction, Rick and Morty use Rick’s “Movie Lizer” to rewrite the franchise himself.

In the Warner Bros. Cafeteria meets a Zwolle Snyder – and after some “Superman” ribs (“Just saw your new cut from” Superman, “Snyder tells Gunn,” and advice, he is the “man of steel”, the “man of the conversation”. Nolan in the gigantic bookcase is not a real fans in the interstellar. ” Universe.

In the end, Rick and Morty-with the help of Jerry-Erin indeed succeed in coming up with a better ending, being sucked into the film-lizer and becoming new “maximum velocitree”. When they die in the movie, Gunn explains: “They did it! What an end! They have thrown the Gunn away!”

Rick and Morty find their way back to the real world, but Gunn steals the hard disk of the film-lizer and takes it to Warner Bros. He says “Mr. Brothers”: “They have cracked the code! This will not only put butts on chairs and sell popcorn, it can hope people! It can save Hollywood, it could change everything.” Warner Brothers is impressed and tells his henchman: “Give this man an ice cream cover!” Gunn is then killed by a gun called ‘Sundae’.

“I am excited for the fans to get it,” Marrderer said. “I feel that they are always hungry for classic episodes ‘Rick and Morty’, who feel like a nice plug-and-play, episode of the week. This feels like it is checking that course in a great way, but then has nice surprises.”

The idea of the film-lizer had been around the writer’s room for a while, Marder said. But at first it was the ‘Boekalizer’ and revolved around Jerry to write a novel. Then the idea turned to films. “Maximum Velocitree” was devised as a nod with the franchises “Transformers” and “Fast and Furious”.

“We had something like that when we make a movie and we go Spies Hollywood, we feel that we have to record our bosses,” he said. “So we started thinking of Warner Bros. Who would be a good sight to be a kind of villain here? James Gunn just such a good choice. We were all pretty sure that when scratching reached, he would be a million percent in the middle of doing ‘Superman’. But he not only had a yes, but I thought it would be that same day” the same day. “

According to Marder, Gunn even made sure that he found time to come by and put his lines in the recording cabin of “Rick and Morty” the morning after he had ended the main production on “Superman”.

“I think Gunn called him about him to make sure that this would ruin nothing. And it seemed that he got the green light fairly quickly,” Marderer said. “They both came in and were really good sports. I am a very proud nerd, I have both boys alert gods. They have creative freedom who have very few people in Hollywood to take big swings.”

Co-maker Dan Harmon of the series was also enthusiastic about the idea that both Gunn and Snyder appeared and took to write that “Superman” dialog between the two. “When he heard that they were on board and she came in, he cracked a little and wanted to make sure that the episode was worthy and she was worthy, had to deliver those lines,” Marrder said.

Gunn and Snyder recorded their lines back-to-back and took a photo together that day viral. But luckily for the show – who wanted to keep their cameet secret – nobody picked up that they met because of “Rick and Morty.”

“I appreciate that we could keep it so far,” said Marder. “We are pretty Fort Knox here, we are really clamped. Everything that comes out in the audience we see, and we get approval because the fans are watching everything, such as the Zapruder film or through a jeweler lens.”

The storyline for “Ricker Than Fiction” was also Meta, who focused on a fan discourse on franchises, continued and long-term IP such as both “superman” and, yes, “Rick and Morty.”

“It is certainly a very high class situation to have such a passionate audience,” said Marder. “It was certainly very organic for the episode. You always hear how everyone could do better and how it seems so easy. Rick and Morty think they can make a better film. They get the keys from the kingdom. And it’s not as easy as it seems. Writing is really difficult. This episode, without being on a soap box.”

Gunn is shot at the end of the episode, but who knows – he could always return now that he is part of the canon of “Rick and Morty”. As for Snyder, the filmmaker is such a fan that he almost immediately asked to do more.

“I direct all the votes, so I directed both boys, and Snyder left, and he came back as a fan and said:” I will do everything for the show. Throw me a tag. Throw me something, “Marder said.” It was just cool to hear such enthusiasm from him. “

So how about a “snyder cut” of “ricker than fiction”?

“That would be cool,” said Marder. “I love a good Snyder -snit!”
