Netflix’s docuseries about the aforementioned Gilgo Beach murders Shannan Gilbert and her death often – but chose to leave her mother killed earlier Rex Huermannarrest.
Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killerwho premiered with Monday, March 31, introduced the serial gills on Gilgo Beach through the lens of Mari GilbertThe search for the truth after her daughter Shannan was missing. Mari eventually died before Huermann was arrested in connection with the murders.
“Some families are not there to see this justice. Both Megan Waterman’s mother, Lorraine Ela, and the mother of Shannan Gilbert, Mari Gilbert, died,” a reporter who was interviewed for the Netflix special. “They fought so hard for the moment. I wish they were here to see it.”
Meanwhile, journalist Robert KolkerWho is an expert in the Gilgo Beach case, added: “I believe that Mari would still campaign to have Shannan’s death rule a murder, and she would not be convinced that Shannan’s death was disconnected from the others.”
Shannan disappeared in 2010 after a visit to a customer on Long Island that she met on Craigslist. The search for Shannan resulted in the discovery of four bodies – Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello And Maureen Brainard barnes -that revealed the existence of a then active serial killer. (More searches have revealed the remains of seven more people, including a toddler.)
Huermann was arrested in 2023 after the case had gone unsolved for more than ten years. He was sued in connection with the death of Barthelemy, Costello, Waterman and Brainard barnes and later with the death of Sandra Costilla And Jessica Taylor.

Mari was not convinced and spent years on the authorities to include Shannan as one of the victims of Huermann. (Huermann has maintained his innocence with regard to every murder.)
“Shannan will be reminded for the girl who has exposed the truth and the murderer because of her death,” said Gilbert Family Attorney John Ray People In 2024. “What the case of Shannan did is that it forced the authorities to finally pursue the evidence that existed for the other girls. Shannan kept the pressure on all those years, although she was dead.”
Although Mari played a crucial role to keep Shannan’s memory alive, both in real life and in the Netflix document, her death was not tackled. In 2016, Mari was deadly stabbed 227 times before she was thrown by her daughter with a fire extinguisher Sarra Gilbert.
“So as many of you may know, my mother died yesterday. She was murdered by my sister, Sarra who fights for 2 1/2 years,” Sherre Gilbert wrote via Facebook in 2016. “My sister Stevie and I were incredibly destroyed without words because our mother was the backbone of the family.”
The lawyer, Ray, publicly stated that Sarra after the death of her sister both emotionally and mentally suffering. Sarra was then sentenced to 25 years in prison.
“Mari’s life, transformed by the death of one daughter, was ended by another,” wrote Kolker in his 2020 book about the murders of Gilgo Beach. “She was not a perfect person and she was a confrontational person.”
Kolker continued: “But in her last years, she became the caretaker for another sick daughter of hers. And her tragic death was terrible. But everyone I spoke to her well said she had grown as a person in her last years and really found a way to live despite such a terrible loss.”
