Their highly published divorce in 1992 left her isolated from a large part of the royal family. But according to new accounts, Diana forged a surprising bond with Philip, who offered her guidance through a series of frank, handwritten letters.

“Diana had a level of trust in Philip that she rarely showed to others,” an insider claimed. “She saw him as a paternal presence – honest, simple, but really worried about finding her place in the royals. His letters were a real source of comfort when she felt the most alone.”

They added: “In a sense, her love for Philip was greater than all the feelings she had for Charles.” Royal Biographer Gyles Brandreth, in his book from 2021, Philip: the last portraitdescribed the correspondence as sympathetic but not translucent.

He wrote Philip’s letters combined affection with Frank Advies and insisted on Diana to think carefully about her marriage.

Brandreth noted: “When Diana received the letters, she was on her most vulnerable and volatile. As soon as they arrived, she opened it, scanned it, usually burst into tears and then shared it with her best friends.”
