Chock and Bates, who first worked together during the 2011-2012 figure skating season, started dating in 2017.
“We just really fell in love on the ice and grew closer,” Bates said exclusively We weekly in February 2018, noting that he had a crush on Chock when they were teenagers. “I love her personality. I love her zest for life.”
Bates and Chock have continued to go for gold at the Olympics, which has consequences for their romance.

After five years together, Bates proposed in June 2022 while on vacation in Thailand. As they prepare for their wedding in 2024, they still enjoy skating competitions together.
“We still love what we do and we enjoy the process,” Chock said Olympics.com in 2023. “Because you have to work day in and day out over the years, you have to be in love with the process. That’s something we did and we still have those feelings.”

2011
The pair first worked together during the 2011 season. (Bates previously placed 11th at the 2010 Olympics with then-partner Emily Samuelson.)
Years later, Chock exploded NBC Sports that she and Bates “got along really well” even before competing together, and that they “had good chemistry from the start.”
2017
During their career heights, Bates and Chock started dating.

They adopted two toy poodles together, Stella and Henry.

Chock and Bates competed together in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Olympic Games. During the tournament in Beijing, they were named co-captains of the 2022 speed skating team.

January 2024
They won their first Grand Prix Final title in December 2023, a month before officially becoming Olympic gold medalists.
Chock, Bates and the rest of Team USA had initially finished second behind the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the team figure skating event. ROC star athlete after lengthy research Kamila Valieva was disqualified for doping, meaning Team USA took home the gold instead.
“It was very unexpected,” Chock said on the channel Today show during an interview with Bates and their teammates. “We just didn’t have a lot of information and people were always asking us. … I didn’t realize how much pressure had been on me, and probably on all of us, until we found out [out] the news. It almost felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders just to feel this conclusion to the Beijing Games.”

Bates and Chock are getting married June 20 in the bride’s native Hawaii, and will tell later People about the traditions of the ceremony.

Chock and Bates won their sixth U.S. Ice Dancing Championship on January 24, tying the record for most wins by a U.S. team of retired skaters Meryl Davis And Charlie White.
March 2025
The couple made history by taking home their third consecutive gold medal at the 2025 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, becoming the first couple to do so in nearly three decades.
“It still feels a little surreal, to be honest. I think it’s going to take a while for it to sink in,” Chock said of their success during a joint interview on Today. “But we just had the best time. Those were our two best performances we could have ever done, and we’re so happy we performed them at the World Championships. There’s no better place.”
Chock noted that she and Bates are “very excited about the season ahead” and teased that the 2026 Winter Olympics will mark their “final” skating season. “We have had such an incredible skating and growing experience over the past three years and we have learned so much about ourselves,” she said. “And we really look forward to tackling this final chapter and putting our whole hearts and minds together to achieve our goals.”
January 2026
In an exclusive interview with Us, Bates recalled the moment something changed in their professional relationship.
“We skated together for five years and it was just a friendship, but the friendship was good,” Bates said. “From day one we were always connected. We laughed, we enjoyed our time together. That made skating so much fun. During the five years we had success and also no success. We’ve had a lot of hard times. During those difficult times, I really realized how much I relied on Maddie and really felt connected to her in a way that went beyond just as a skating partner.”
He continued, “I remember thinking, ‘I can’t really imagine one day leaving the rink and going our separate ways, being friends and just not seeing each other anymore.’ I made the realization, I shared the realization and thankfully the realization was reciprocated. That changed everything in our relationship and our partnership.”
Chock admitted that his revelation “came out of the blue.”
“I knew we always had incredible chemistry,” she said. “We had so much fun together. We were good friends. Training was always fun because we always got along. We had the same work ethic. But when he told me how he felt, I was so surprised because I didn’t see it coming at all.”
Chock continued, “When I really sat and thought about it, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I feel the same things about you. This is incredible.'”
