OKUPA BRINGS A NEW GENERATION OF URBAN HOSPITALITY TO THE GREEK CAPITAL | News

A year after opening in the heart of Athens’ vibrant Psiri neighborhood, Okupa is entering a new chapter, following a first year marked by local recognition and word of mouth.
following among the city’s creative community. A new and next generation expression of Athenian hospitality, Okupa is designed for the modern traveler looking for an alternative to conventional boutique hospitality. Created not for a specific audience, but for people with a shared sensibility, Okupa reflects a more fluid, contemporary way of experiencing Athens – one in which design, gastronomy, culture, music and people coexist within a single urban environment.

Located in a former industrial building full of archaeological remains, Okupa is in a place where past and present are in constant dialogue. The name is derived from the Spanish word ocupar – meaning ‘occupy’ – and reflects the founders’ intention to create a space activated by openness, exchange and shared experiences. Founded by entrepreneurs Georges Batrouni and Hrag Darakjian – professionals from different but complementary backgrounds and united by a shared commitment to hospitality as a vehicle for cultural exchange – the concept has evolved in its first year into a meeting place for international guests, local creatives and culturally curious travelers drawn to a more lived-in expression of Athens.

Okupa consists of 32 rooms conceived as contemporary urban retreats, where warm, earthy tones and expressive accents create an atmosphere that feels calm yet connected to the surrounding city. Private rooms feature luxury bedding, integrated projectors and Roberts radio speakers. Certain categories offer terraces or views of the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill. In addition to private accommodation, the hotel also offers elevated shared rooms designed for larger groups and individual travelers looking to connect without sacrificing comfort or design, with sophisticated bunk bed configurations offering a better alternative to conventional formats, while maintaining the same material quality and aesthetic cohesion found throughout the property.

Okupa Kitchen & Listening Bar
Central to the Okupa concept is the Kitchen & Listening Bar, which plays a decisive role in shaping the atmosphere of the hotel. The restaurant offers three different daily menus and evolves from a relaxed atmosphere during the day to a pleasant evening gathering, accompanied by curated vinyl sessions by local and international music selectors.

At Okupa Kitchen & Listening Bar, the culinary offering moves fluidly through the day, shaped around the changing needs of the guests. The approach is based on a simple idea: how the experience can evolve throughout the day while maintaining a clear and consistent identity. Open from morning to night, the space brings together breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, drinks and music under one direction – built on seasonality, local sourcing and a clean, ingredient-driven approach. There is a Mediterranean base running through, layered with a clear Levantine influence that determines both the technique and the taste.
During the day, the menu focuses on lighter, nutritious dishes, designed with balance and clarity in mind. Towards the evening, the format changes to a more lively, sharing-oriented experience, with dishes designed to be enjoyed at the table, between sips and conversations. The plates are built around strong, recognizable flavors, with the main ingredient always central. Elements such as tahini, herbs and spices are used to support and uplift, never to overwhelm. The result is food that at first glance is direct, expressive and easy to understand.
One of the highlights of the menu is the muhammara toast with smoked mackerel, a combination of charred sourdough, a rich dip of Florina peppers, walnuts and pomegranate molasses, topped with charred Aegean smoked mackerel – a dish that opens the table and sets the tone. In addition, the shrimp saganaki fatayer revisits a well-known Greek flavor in a more playful form, combining shrimp, feta and a lightly spiced tomato sauce in one package, served with saffron aioli.
The cocktail list follows the same approach, built around seasonal ingredients and a clear understanding of each spirit and what it is paired with. Each signature drink starts from a classic reference point, reworked with a subtle Okupa touch.
Music plays an equally central role. Carefully curated throughout the day, the sound changes pace and tone as the space moves into the evening, with eclectic groove-based selections setting the mood. As the night progresses, the space leans further towards the identity of the listening bar, with the Japanese-inspired audiophile corner, vinyl-LED DJ sets and subtle shifts in lighting, creating an environment that feels intimate yet informal, reinforcing Okupa’s identity as a restaurant and cultural space. “We have always believed that hospitality is in the details, but only works when it is in harmony: food, drinks, service, atmosphere and music, all coming together in a way that feels natural yet stays with you,” explains co-founder Hrag Darakjian.

A living platform for community and culture
Operating as a constantly evolving platform, Okupa’s programming is organic, shaped through collaborations with local creatives and cultural collectives. From wellness sessions and movement exercises in the basement to culturally led events including workshops, art exhibitions and social dinner events, the calendar reflects a commitment to fostering true community engagement.

Beyond the bedrooms, Okupa unfolds through a series of interconnected communal areas designed to promote both interaction and convenience. At the lower ground level, the Basement, a multi-functional cultural space, hosts supper clubs, private gatherings, screenings, wellness and exercise practices, including yoga, barre à terre and sound healing sessions, with preserved archaeological finds, left exposed, adding a raw character to the space. On the mezzanine floor, the library and co-working space, furnished with carefully selected vintage items, offer soundproof telephone booths, a quiet enclosed meeting room and curated multilingual reading corners, creating a comfortable yet productive environment open to both guests and local residents.

On the ground floor, a sunlit courtyard extends the social rhythm outdoors, serving as an alternative workspace, a relaxed lunch environment and occasional venue for culture-led activities, while upstairs a seasonal rooftop pool offers hotel guests 360-degree views across the Athenian urban skyline towards the Acropolis. The Kitchen & Listening Bar forms the social heart of the property, moving from daytime dining to vinyl nights, while a concept boutique next to the reception offers handmade objects from local makers, a selection of handpicked records and branded items that reinforce the hotel’s close relationship with Athens’ creative scene.

Architecture and spatial continuity
Located in a former industrial warehouse, Okupa builds on a structure originally defined by open floors and a practical garage on the ground floor. Originally defined by open floors and a utilitarian garage on the ground floor, the structure has undergone extensive structural strengthening and architectural intervention led by Andrea Zoumbouli of Remy Architects, with interiors by designer Nohad Bouez and co-founder Georges Batrouni.

Okupa’s architectural design reflects the project’s broader philosophy: a space designed for culturally curious travelers – from digital nomads and creatives to leisure guests drawn to community, authenticity, design and meaningful encounters. Here, locals and travelers intersect naturally and share space in a way that feels easy and casual. Set in a building whose original architecture has a distinctly modern 1970s character, the interior creates a purposeful dialogue between eras, retaining the rough textures of the property’s industrial past and introducing warmth through natural materials, earth tones and carefully placed, contrasting color accents. Vintage and contemporary pieces coexist throughout, forming a layered visual language, rooted in modernist restraint, yet softened by personality and ease. Iconic works by designers such as Marcel Breuer, Osvaldo Borsani and Mies van der Rohe are collected alongside more contemporary additions through international vintage auctions, creating interiors that feel collected rather than composed – expressive, tactile and quietly a reflection of Athens itself. “For us, hospitality is an artisanal practice. It’s about creating spaces that feel lived in and real, where every detail – from music to food to conversations – is carefully curated and not manufactured,” adds co-founder Georges Batrouni.

Okupa opened in November 2024 and is located at Psaromiligkou 9, Athens 105 53
