Nicole Kidman explains why she appears in so many projects
Is Nicole Kidman the hardest working person in Hollywood right now?
This past year, Nicole Kidman starred in ‘A Family Affair’ and ‘Babygirl’. On the TV side, she starred in “Expats” and “The Perfect Couple” and will return to Taylor Sheridan’s “Lioness” for its second season, launching Oct. 27 on Paramount+.
At the same time, she will appear in season 2 of the Hulu series “Nine Perfect Strangers,” the animated film “Spellbound” and the thriller “Holland, Michigan.” She also stars in the title role in “Scarpetta,” Amazon’s upcoming series adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s mystery books, opposite Jamie Lee Curtis and Ariana DeBose. She hopes to get a third season of “Big Little Lies” off the ground, as well as a sequel to “Practical Magic.”
Still, Kidman says she does find time to sleep. “I slept nine hours last night,” she says Variety at the ‘Lioness’ season 2 premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening.
She admits that she is thinking about taking a break from work. “I do, but in this strange way there are so many opportunities to serve the people who are emerging, and what I have and can do for people like [‘Babygirl’ writer and director] Helena [Reijn]. It’s really hard for me to say, ‘Okay, I’m just going to take care of myself,’ because I take care of other people so much,” says Kidman, who returns to “Lioness” as Kaitlyn Meade. “I think, ‘I can create more work for people. I can create jobs for people.” And I love it too. I have the passion. I just have to take care of my body. I wish I had superpowers because I would love to be everywhere.”
She adds: “This is what I dreamed of since I was a little girl. I love what I do, so I’m just going to give it my all, and then I’m not going to date. I’m going home to be with my family. We do things together. I don’t go to nightclubs.”
“Scarpetta” marks the first time Kidman and Curtis have collaborated. Kidman says of her co-star, “Talk about someone who has hit her stride and owns where she is at a certain point in her life and so deserves it.”
Previously, Kidman’s ‘Lioness’ colleagues were enthusiastic about working with her.
“She’s so nice,” said Jill Wagner, who plays Bobby. “I had a friend visiting on set whose mother almost died of cancer and Nicole said, ‘Hey, let me make a video for Mom Sandy.’ She did that out of the goodness of her heart. I didn’t ask her to do that. These are the little things I’m sure people don’t know. But she is one of a kind.”
Zoe Saldaña, who stars as Joe on the show, recalls her first day on set with Kidman. “I’m like, ‘Act cool.’ Don’t trop. Don’t forget your lines. Don’t blow your mind.’ But then I forget it all and we compare notes about our kids and ask for advice on things like restaurants.
