Murder conviction of Serial’s Adnan Syed upheld, new hearing ordered

“Serial” topic Adnan SyedThe legal battle continues… as the Maryland Supreme Court has upheld a lower appeals court ruling reinstating Syed’s murder conviction.

The highest court in Maryland upheld the ruling that determined Syed’s case should be remanded to the trial court to reconsider whether his conviction should stand… essentially reversing the court’s 2022 ruling. quashed the conviction and exempt AS.

The new hearing has not yet been scheduled… but if it does happen, the family of his alleged victim… Hae Min Leewill almost certainly be in court.

As we told you, Syed’s murder conviction — which was popularized in 2014 on the “Serial” podcast — was overturned after prosecutors revealed there were two other possible suspects in the case.

Lee’s brother, Young Leewas angry with the court’s ruling … and had Syed’s murder conviction reinstated on the grounds that he and his family had not been given adequate notice of the hearing.

In a 4-3 decision, the state Supreme Court agreed that Lees should have been given a notice of termination… although the reinstated conviction doesn’t necessarily mean Syed will have to go back to prison.

He has been out since late 2022, and is reported to remain there pending the outcome of the next hearing — with the Maryland Supreme Court saying he can remain free in the meantime.
