Morbido, Screen Captial Unveiling Latam Genre Streaming Hub, Umbra

Chilean investment firm Screen Capital has versatile Communications Inc. taken over to launch the first multi-platform Hub of the region that is fully devoted to horror and fantasy content. With an initial investment of $ 2.5 million from Screen Capital’s Screen II Fund, the initiative marks a groundbreaking company in specialized genre content with global ambitions.

Eduardo Caso, an industrial veterinarian and the driving force behind the popular Mórbido -TV channel, forms the core of this new endeavor. “The fantasy and horror’sre is one of the most diverse in terms of subgenres worldwide, and it has a very loyal audience. As soon as people become fans, they continue to be deeply involved,” he says the variety of the inspirations of the new initiative. “In Latin -America there is a strong demand for this type of content, but production and distribution are limited. This gap offers an important chance of stimulating regional development in the genre, especially with the support of the investors of Screen Capital. Together with [Morbido Group CEO] Pablo Guisa, we have been developing this idea for years, and now we finally have the chance to bring it to life. ”

The center of the new company is the creation of Umbra, an ecosystem of the horror and fantasy content with a fast (free advertisement television) channel, AVOD (advertising-based video on demand), SVOD (subscription video on request) and the linear Mórbido-TV-channel. Subscribers get access to an extensive catalog, including classic films, original productions, series, podcasts, audio books and experimental formats.

The relocation also marks a significant expansion of Mórbido TV Entertainment Spa, now with headquarters in Chile, where the company will supervise global activities aimed at talent development, project acquisition and regional distribution.

“For screen capital it is very attractive to be able to enter a market that we had never investigated before, but that we know has a high involvement with the regional public,” says Edgar Spielmann, partner at Screen Capital and Incoming board member for the new company. “Although it is considered a niche, the figures are surprising and it is one of the species specialized content with the best performance in the region.”

Screen Capital, partly founded by Joyce Zylberberg and Tatiana Emden, is known for backing companies that merge technology and entertainment. The acquisition of versatile communication is the first investment of the Screen II fund, which is specifically aimed at such innovative intersections.

The strong market positioning of Mórbido is further improved by partnerships with Grupo Mórbido, Mantícora Distribución and the fantastic pavilion of the Marché du film at the Cannes film festival. These strategic alliances will feed on an exclusive and continuously renewed content pipeline.

The initiative is aimed at a lucrative demography: adults aged 25-44 from backgrounds of the higher middle class, which demonstrate loyalty in the long term and a willingness to consume horror and fantasy content in multiple formats.

With this investment, Screen Capital and Mórbido TV have aimed at transforming the UMBRA brand into the most important destination of Latin -America for horror and fantasy, setting new benchmarks in genre -content distribution and creative development.
