Microsoft says its Aurora AI can accurately predict air quality, typhoons, and more

One of the newest AI models from Microsoft can accurately predict the air quality, hurricanes, typhoons and other weather-related phenomena, the company claims.

In one Paper published in the journal Nature and an accompanying Blog post This week, Microsoft Aurora has detailed detailed, the tech giant says that it can predict atmospheric events with more precision and speed than traditional meteorological approaches. Aurora, which is trained on more than a million hours of data from satellites, radar and weather stations, simulations and predictions, can be refined with additional data to make predictions for certain weather conditions.

AI weather models are nothing new. Google DeepMind has released a handful in recent years, including WeatherThe lab claims that it beats some of the world’s best prediction systems. Microsoft positions Aurora as one of the top performers of the field – and a potential blessing for laboratories that study resistance.

In experiments, Aurora predicted the landing of Typhoon Doksuri in the Philippines four days prior to the actual event, where some expert predictions defeated, says Microsoft. The model also surpassed the National Hurricane Center in predicting five-day tropical cyclone tracks for the 2022-2023 season and successfully predicted the Sandstorm in Iraq 2022.

Although Aurora needed a substantial computer infrastructure to train, Microsoft says that the model is very efficient to turn. It generates predictions in seconds compared to the hours that traditional systems use with the help of Supercomputer hardware.

Microsoft, which has made public the source code and model weights, says that the AIOR’s AI modeling records in its MSN -Weather -app through a specialized version of the model that produces hourly prognoses, including for clouds.
