Michael Che slams Trump and calls out R Kelly

For his first “Weekend Update” segment after Donald Trump’s victory on Tuesday, co-host Michael Che appeared to raid his liquor cabinet.

“How did I let you convince me that rural Pennsylvania would choose the Jamaican Indian lady?” Che complained before reaching under his desk for a glass of brown liquid. “Obviously I’ve spent too much time on white liberals and their crazy optimism. It wasn’t even close. At one point, Trump was so far ahead that they brought in Bronny,” he added, referring to the son of NBA superstar LeBron James and current teammate on the Los Angeles Lakers.

Che’s comedy partner Colin Jost made his own jokes about the newly elected president, poking fun at Trump’s promise of a golden age for America (“Things turn gold when the sun sets”) and Vice President J.D. Vance’s experience as a adult Catholic convert to his own past as a teenage altar boy. But Che delivered the evening’s most provocative lyrics by referencing R&B star and convicted sex abuser R. Kelly.

“Are you going to let a man with 34 felonies lead the free world and become president of the United States? That’s it, I’m listening to R. Kelly again,” Che said as he continued to use his drink as a prop. ‘I already do that, but I’ll stop pretending it’s not the case. If white people can choose their thug, I can dance to mine.”

Che concluded the topical portion of the segment by addressing Trump’s historic appeal among working-class voters, pointing out that the 10 richest people on the planet quickly amassed about $60 billion in wealth after the election. “Yes, the richest people immediately became richer. But don’t worry, I’m sure yours will come soon, Earl!
