Meet Marcello Hernandez’s Parents: What You Need to Know About His Mom and Dad

Hernandez was born and raised in Miami, Florida, by his mother, Isabeland his stepfather. His father and mother divorced shortly after emigrating to America, but the Saturday evening live star has remained close to both of them, as well as his stepfather.
“I have two fathers and a mother,” Hernandez said during a January 2026 appearance Dax Shepard“S”Armchair expertpodcast. “I was lucky to have a good stepfather. I think it’s also a difficult position to be in.”
Hernandez decided to pursue a career in comedy after playing football in his teens. Although he said his mother and stepfather “supported” his choice, his father was a little harder to convince.
“My dad had been to a few tournaments and had seen me play really well. And I think he always had that in his mind, like, ‘You’re really good. I’ve seen you excel. I don’t think you should drop this for something you’re not that good at yet.’ But my mother and my stepfather said, ‘If you want to do this, we’re in. Go for it.’

Marcello Hernandez’s mother and stepfather are both from Cuba, while his father is from the Dominican Republic. The comedian revealed on ‘Armchair Expert’ that his mother fled Cuba when she was 12 years old and briefly moved to Spain and the Dominican Republic before settling in America.

Marcello Hernandez’s parents divorced when he was young. Isabela remarried when Hernandez was about 4 or 5 years old.
During his stand-up routine at Montreal Just for Laughs in 2022, Hernandez joked about why his parents’ marriage ended in divorce.
“It doesn’t work,” he said. “They came to America with the same idea, just a little bit different. My mother came here and said, ‘Oh my God, look at all these opportunities.’ And then my dad came here and said, ‘Oh my God, look at all these opportunities. This is not a place to get married, this is the land of opportunity.’”

Marcello Hernandez’s mother has accompanied him at several red carpet events, as well as during a January 2026 interview on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle. Isabel even appeared in a T-Mobile commercial with her son in 2024.
“My mother is a real example as a person,” Hernandez said on “Armchair Expert.” “Someone who is moral, who takes care of her family, who is kind to people, who is respectful, who gives back her time. She’s just a beautiful person.”
Hernandez continued, “And she’s been through a lot of dark things. And she communicated that to me quite a bit. … And when you grow up like that and then something good happens to you and you feel like you’ve made it, the first thing that comes to my mind all the time, whenever I do an interview or someone asks me, all I can think is, ‘I can’t believe she’s getting to see this.'”
Marcello Hernandez’s parents inspire his stand-up comedy routines
Marcello Hernandez often incorporates jokes about his father and mother into his stand-up routines, as well as Saturday Night Live skits. For example, Isabel served as the inspiration for his viral “Protective Mom” sketch with Pedro Pascal in 2023. In the sketch, Hernandez played a man who introduces his new girlfriend (Chloe Fineman) to his Latina mother (Pascal).
“One of the parts of the sketch is that my mom doesn’t believe in ADHD, so one of the lines is, ‘My son doesn’t have ADHD, he just likes to jump,’” Hernandez said. Late Night with Seth Meyers in October 2023. “So that sounds like her.”
