Lisa Vicari Reunites with Dark Creators in HBO Max Thriller Series

Lisa Vicari, the German star best known for Netflix’s cult science fiction mystery thriller “Dark,” reunites with the show’s creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, for their next series.

Variety understands that Vicari – currently starring in the Berlin second season of Apple TV’s “Hijack” – will helm the duo’s upcoming HBO Max show, based on the 19th century German children’s book “Struwwelpeter.”

First teased last year when announcing the launch of HBO Max in Germany (which took place on January 13), the series will transform the 10 gruesome stories from Heinrich Hoffmann’s original 1845 book into a modern thriller, with an emphasis on adult rather than child characters. Produced by Dark Ways, it follows a federal investigator who solves ritual murders, inspired by the dark cautionary tales. The series is described as a “cruel reality” thriller that functions as a family drama exploring themes of punishment and forgiveness.

The first story, after which ‘Struwwelpeter’ (which translates as ‘Shocked Peter’) is named, tells the story of a dirty and lazy boy who does not take care of himself properly and is unloved as a result.

Production on the show is now underway.

In addition to ‘Dark’ and ‘Hijack’, Vicari is known for her starring role in Oliver Kienle’s ‘Isi & Ossi’, the German romantic comedy in which she co-starred with Dennis Mojen. One of Netflix’s first German films, “Isi & Ossi”, was released in 2020. Vicari was also one of the leading actors in “Django”, the English-language series Sky Atlantic-Canal+, a new version of the 1966 Italian film of the same name.
