Lily Allen shares clues to Madeline’s identity amid cheating allegations

Lily Allen sings about a woman named Madeline on her new album, West End girl – and she has a lot to say about her lyrical inspiration.
“Intimacy is inherently messy. There are usually agreed-upon boundaries in relationships, but whether or not those boundaries are enforced suddenly becomes a gray area,” Allen, 40, told me. The Times of London in a profile from Saturday, October 25. “Dating apps make people disposable and that leads to the idea that if you’re not happy, there’s so much more to choose from, right in your pocket.”
On West End girl, Allen claims that her partner – believed to be her estranged husband – Stranger things star David Harbor – had been unfaithful with a woman named Madeline. The name is first referenced in the song ‘Tennis’.
“So I read your lyrics, and now I regret it / I don’t understand how you played tennis,” Allen sings in the chorus. “If it was just sex I wouldn’t be jealous / You don’t play with me and who is Madeline?”
Madeline is referenced again on a song of the same name, in which Allen sings about messaging the other woman herself.
“I know none of this is your fault / Sending a message feels kind of offensive,” she sings. “I saw your text, that’s how I found out / Tell me the truth and his motives.”
When pressed by the Times about her musical inspiration, Allen succinctly joked: “[She’s] a fictional character.” The artist also said that Madeline is actually a construction of several others.
“I just feel like we’re living in really interesting times — in terms of how we define intimacy and monogamy, whether people are disposable or not,” she told the outlet. “The way we are intimate with each other is changing as people. Many young women no longer find the idea of marriage or even a long-term relationship so attractive.”
She continued, “I don’t know [that] it is necessarily bad. Many people from my parents’ generation stayed together forever and were miserable. You didn’t have endless choices, so maybe you worked on something more difficult. But now that is no longer necessary.”
Allen released her new album, her first in seven years, on Friday, October 24, which chronicles a breakup. Fans have theorized that ever since West End girl is based on Allen’s marriage and subsequent divorce from Harbour, 50. (The two stars were married from 2020 to 2024.)
“I made this record in December 2024 and it was a way for me to process what was happening in my life,” Allen said. British Vogue earlier this month. “There are things that I’ve gone through in my marriage, but that doesn’t mean it’s all gospel. It’s inspired by what happened in the relationship.”
Harbor has not publicly responded to Allen’s alleged cheating allegations, but has only spoken once about their divorce. (We weekly asked for comment.)
“I protect the people and the reality of my life,” Harbor said GQ in April. “That form of involvement makes no sense [with rumors] because it is all based on hysterical exaggeration.”
Before marrying Harbor, Allen married Sam Cooper in 2011. They eventually split in 2018 after welcoming daughters Ethel, now 13, and Marnie, now 12.
West End girl is out now.
