Kit Harington was ‘angry’ about the Game of Thrones season 8 remake

Kit Harington recently told the newspaper New York Times that he was deeply offended by the viral petition 2019 that season 8 of ‘Game of Thrones’ will be remade with ‘competent writers’. The petition started with a goal of 15,000 signatures and ultimately received more than 1.8 million signatures.

“That really pissed me off,” Harington said, pointing to the efforts of series writers David Benioff and DB Weiss. “Like, how dare you? Sorry, that’s exactly how I feel. I think it was a level of idiocy that could only come through social media.”

Harington, who starred in the HBO drama as Jon Snow, told the Times he was in rehab when the final season of “Game of Thrones” premiered. When he was released, he was shocked by the overwhelming negativity given the work he and the rest of the production team had done. Harington recalled that a battle scene took 55 consecutive days of filming.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys, then head of programming, said in 2019 that he and the “GOT” team were aware of the petition but never “seriously considered” listening to HBO’s demands for a reshoot.

“There are very few downsides to having a hugely popular show, but I can think of one: If you try to end it, a lot of people have big opinions about how it should end,” he said. “The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show, but it wasn’t something we seriously considered.”

Season 8 of “Game of Thrones” was criticized for everything from its treatment of its female leads to its lighting and cinematography. The most viral backlash of the season came after fans noticed a misplaced Starbucks cup in one scene.
