King Charles caught between a diplomatic rock and a hard place
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has clashed with Trump on key issues.
The dilemma stems from tense relations between Washington and London, especially after disagreements over British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US military strategy in Iran.
Trump has recently criticized Starmer, declaring he is “no Winston Churchill”, while British political figures have urged the king to reconsider the trip altogether.
Despite this, officials involved in planning the visit warn that canceling the visit could have significant diplomatic consequences.
A source in Washington familiar with the arrangements told us: “As things stand, the king is really caught between a rock and a hard place, because there is no outcome here that doesn’t have dire consequences. Every option on the table carries with it some degree of political and diplomatic risk.”

Fears Trump will go nuclear if visit is canceled

Trump is expected to host the 77-year-old monarch amid rising political tensions.
“If he goes ahead with the visit, there are concerns that it could be interpreted as a tacit endorsement of a highly controversial moment in American politics, which could draw criticism at home and abroad,” the insider said. “But if he pulls back, there is an equally strong expectation that Trump will respond very forcefully, potentially escalating matters publicly and further straining relations.”
According to the source, interests surrounding the visit have increased in recent weeks.
“There is a strong feeling among those involved that Trump will ‘go nuclear’ if the visit is ultimately canceled, and that response would likely be immediate and very public,” they said.

Politicians are calling for the abolition of state visits during conflicts

Sources fear Trump’s reaction if the king were to cancel the planned visit.
“The expectation is that Trump will not hold back in attributing responsibility if Charles abandons his visit, and will almost certainly point the finger at Starmer and the British government, treating this as a political slight rather than a diplomatic decision.”
The situation has been further complicated by ongoing conflicts involving Iran and criticism from British politicians. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has called for Charles’ visit to be scrapped, arguing it would be inappropriate given current global tensions.
He raged: “Keir Starmer should advise the King that the state visit to the US, planned for April, should be called off. At a time when Trump has launched an illegal war that is devastating the Middle East and driving up energy bills for British families, it is clear that this visit should not go ahead.”

Emily Thornberry warned that the timing of the trip proved problematic due to global conflicts.
Meanwhile, Emily Thornberry, chair of the UK Foreign Affairs Select Committee, has warned that the timing of the trip could be problematic. She said: “If it were to go ahead next month – the dates haven’t been confirmed yet but everyone seems to think it will happen next month – it would go ahead against the backdrop of a war and that, I think, is quite difficult.”
However, others have urged Charles to continue. Royal experts say the king’s personal relationship with Trump could allow him to influence the US president in ways not possible for political leaders. One told us: “Unlike political leaders, Charles has the ability to engage Trump on a more personal level, and some believe this could open the door to more measured and constructive conversations.”
They added: “That is precisely why the prospect of canceling the visit is being taken so seriously. Walking away would not only avoid a difficult situation – it would also eliminate any chance of that kind of direct, personal influence being exerted.”
Diplomatic voices in the US have also warned against abandoning the trip.
One source said: “From a diplomatic perspective, this visit is about much more than the current political moment. It represents the continuity of a long-standing relationship between two allied nations, and traditionally those ties are maintained even when there are clear disagreements at government level. That is what makes the king’s situation so challenging. He is being asked to confront very real political tensions while also staying above them, upholding his constitutional role of neutrality without giving the impression of being disengaged or ineffective.”
