7:32 PM PT — Sources close to Kenan tell TMZ that this was a contractual disagreement and not that he had chosen not to pay rent. Our sources tell us that Kenan never received the keys to the property or even set foot on the property.
Kenan Thompson is being taken to court by a landlord who claims he is owed more than $34,000 for breaking his lease on a rental house.
According to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ, the “SNL” star is being sued for allegedly violating a 12-month lease on a 3-bedroom rental home in Los Angeles.
In the documents, the landlord claims they entered into a written lease with Kenan in September…they say the lease started on October 1st and that Kenan agreed to pay the $10,250 rent for one year before the month-to-month lease expired.
The problem is…the landlord claims Kenan has violated the lease and owes $17,425 in unpaid rent for November and December.
Additionally, the landlord claims they had trouble finding a replacement tenant and could only get someone to move in at a lower rent… and the landlord says Kenan must pay the difference, which in this case amounts to $15,750 over the life of the 12-month lease.
The documents show the landlord is also going after Kenan for an $871 fine… plus a $9,594 broker fee and $1,000 in “legal fees recoverable under the lease.”
Kenan’s landlord says he owes a total of $34,390 after being credited for the $10,250 security deposit he paid.
We’ve reached out to Kenan’s camp…so far no word back.
