Katy Perry Talks About Recent Collaboration With Dr. Luke for Call Her Daddy

Katya Perry spoke about the backlash she received for working with a disgraced producer Dr. Lucas on her upcoming album, 143.

“I understand it has started a lot of conversations,” Perry, 39, said during her conversation Podcast ‘Call her daddy’ interview, released on Wednesday, September 4. “He was one of many employees I worked with.”

Podcast host Alex Cooper noted that “a lot of people have expressed disappointment” about the collaboration and asked why Perry decided to work with him.

“The reality is it came from me,” Perry explained. “The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people who helped facilitate all of that – one of the writers, one of the producers.”

The singer emphasized that she “speaks from her own experience” with her music.

“When I talk about ‘Women’s World’ I’m talking about the feeling that I am now so powerful as a mother, as a woman, about giving birth, creating life, creating a new set of organs, a brain, a heart, she continued, referring to the single released in July. “I created a whole heart, and I did it, and I still do it. I’m still a matriarch and I feel really rooted in that. That’s where I’m speaking from.”

Perry added: “I created all of this with different collaborators, people I’ve worked with in the past – from Teen dream era – all that.”

After “Woman’s World” debuted, fans quickly called out Perry for dating Dr. Luke (real name Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald) had worked on the song. The controversy escalated when Kesha appeared to subtly influence the collaboration.

“Lol,” Kesha, 37, shared via X at the time. Although she never confirmed the speculation, fans were convinced she was sharing a sharp message for Perry.

Kesha has a long history with Dr. Luke, 50, who she accused of assault in 2014. In a lawsuit, the singer claimed that she woke up in Dr. Luke’s bed in 2005, “sore and sick, with no memory of how she got there.” The producer denied the allegations and filed a defamation lawsuit against Kesha.

While Kesha filed her first complaint against Dr. Luke withdrew, their defamation lawsuit continued until June 2023, when the two reached a settlement agreement.

Perry became involved in the legal battle in June 2017 when court documents released at the time showed text messages from Kesha claiming that Perry had also been an alleged victim of Luke. In a statement the following month, Perry denied any sort of sexual relationship with the producer.

Perry’s most recent collaboration with Dr. Luke on ‘Woman’s World’ appears to be the first time they’ve collaborated since her 2012 hit ‘Part of Me’. When it comes to the evolution of her music, Perry said during Wednesday’s episode ‘Call Her Daddy’ that she has remained authentic over the years.

“I just do what makes me happy and what I have resonance with, and that gives me chills,” she said. “I don’t feel like I have to make music. I don’t feel like I have to prove anything. I now do it from a place of celebration and love.”
