Kamala Harris calls Trump ‘threat to democracy’ in Ellipse speech
Despite Harris’ promises and statements during the speech, President Joe Biden caused an uproar after calling Trump supporters “trash” just hours earlier.
On Sunday night, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe took the stage at Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden and called Puerto Rico a “floating island of trash.”
After the huge backlash, senior advisor Danielle Alvarez said in a statement: “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”
During a Zoom call Tuesday, Biden said, “The only trash I see floating out there is his supporters — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American. It’s completely at odds with everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”
Following the backlash Biden received over the comment, the White House attempted to clarify the remarks.
Spokesman Andrew Bates said Biden was referring to the “hateful rhetoric” at the MSG rally, and not to the former president’s supporters.
