Jimmy Kimmel Live cancels shows due to fires in Los Angeles
“Jimmy Kimmel Live” was canceled Wednesday night due to the fires that have been raging throughout Los Angeles since Tuesday, Variety has confirmed. Kimmel’s Wednesday guests included Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Brian Jordan Alvarez (“English Teacher”) and musical guest Victoria Canal. Should “JKL” also close on Thursday, the list currently includes Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) and musical guest The Lumineers.
CBS also canceled tapings for “After Midnight,” hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, for the remainder of the week due to the ongoing fires in Los Angeles. The show, which is taped at Paramount’s studio, will now be repeated on Wednesdays and Thursdays. (A repeat was already scheduled for Friday.) Wednesday’s episode of “After Midnight” was originally going to feature comedians Heather McMahan and Zach Noe Towers, as well as actor-reality star Lisa Rinna. And Thursday’s episode would feature comics Dustin Nickerson, Russell Howard and Aparna Nancherla.
After high winds began hitting the city Tuesday morning, a fast-moving fire broke out in the Pacific Palisades and quickly engulfed the neighborhood, burning down homes, businesses and schools. Because the wind has continued to blow and is not expected to subside until Wednesday evening, the fire is far from under control. Later Tuesday, the Eaton Fire started in Altadena, causing similar destruction there that has also spread to Pasadena. Later Tuesday, the Hurst Fire also broke out in the San Fernando Valley. All of Los Angeles County is on alert for more fires and evacuations, and California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Tuesday.
The fires have shut down the entertainment industry. Tuesday night’s premieres for the films “Unstoppable” and “Wolf Man” were canceled, as were Wednesday’s scheduled premieres for the film “Better Man” and the Max TV series “The Pitt.” The SAG Award nominations were announced via email rather than in person. Universal Studios is closed. A premiere for “The Last Showgirl” scheduled for Thursday at the Chinese Theater Multiplex in Hollywood has been canceled, and the annual BAFTA Tea set for this weekend has been cancelled. Production of films and television shows has been halted all the time, and the Critics Choice Awards ceremony, which will take place in Santa Monica on January 12, is also in doubt.
