Introducing the new blackcurrant route of Burgundy (Route du Cassis) | News

You probably know about Burgundy’s world-class wines, but there’s another local treasure waiting to be discovered: the blackcurrant. Between Dijon and Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy has unveiled a new gourmet tourist route that could soon become one of the region’s signature experiences: the Route du Cassis, or Blackcurrant Route. The route, which stretches over 55 km, turns Burgundy’s iconic blackcurrant into a cultural symbol in itself, uniting heritage, taste and well-being. Set off along this delightful new trail and delve into the history and know-how behind this small fruit, grown in the region since the 17th century.

The story begins where tradition takes root: in the Cassissium in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Workshops, tastings and sessions led by experts provide a fascinating introduction to the history of the fruit. In Dijon, the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin adds a new layer to the experience, presenting an area where craftsmanship is passed down from generation to generation with pride and precision. As the road winds towards family farms such as Ferme Fruirouge or Maison Lejay-Lagoute, visitors meet growers with an almost artisanal dedication to local varieties. Ferme Fruirouge grows organic berries and makes fruit jams and butter, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (including the famous Crème de Cassis de Bourgogne IGP Bio) and condiments: vinegar, mustard and blackcurrant ketchup.

The Blackcurrant Route places an unexpected emphasis on well-being. Infused oils, antioxidant treatments and cassis-based scrubs reveal an intimate dimension of the vitamin C-rich fruit. The entire route can be explored by bike, supported by the ‘Balades en Bourgogne’ app. The geolocated maps and audio stories accompany the ride like a living travel diary.

To complete the trip, two striking hotels offer sophisticated retreats. Hôtel Bellevigne in Chambolle-Musigny, set among prestigious vineyards, and Hôtel Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée both cultivate an understated, elegant approach to hospitality – ideal for moments of quiet indulgence.

For British travelers drawn to authenticity, thoughtful experiences and easily accessible escapes, the Route du Cassis offers an attractive alternative to long-distance travel. It combines culture, scenery and gastronomic delights with the unmistakable French elegance so admired across the Channel. An invitation to relax, catch your breath and enjoy Burgundy at its most authentic – and just one of the many gastronomic routes through the region.
