In CBS ‘Late Night Breakup with Stephen Colbert

The state of TV in the late night prevents media managers from sleeping well.

The decision of CBS to lower the ties with Stephen Colbert and his decades old “Late Show” franchise will leave a large hole in the format but one that is larger in May. TV networks have discussed the costs in the late night in recent years. NBC broke up in 2021 with Lilly Singh, a young comic that was the newest personality to organize an original hour of comedy and to talk at 1:30 am, and then decided to stop producing new content for the time slot. The network also took the live band from Seth Meyers “Late Night” and recently cut Friday broadcasts from Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show”. CBS replaces a budding program of 12.30 pm, “After Midnight” with old repetitions of the syndicated “Comics Unleashed”. Jimmy Kimmel goes on vacation every summer enough that ABC replaces to fill with the late-night program. And the current version of Comedy Central of “The Daily Show” contains his main gas lord, Jon Stewart, only once a week.

CBS has been worried about this dynamic for months, even in recent years, according to two people who are familiar with the issue. While Colbert was officially informed on Wednesday evening about the decision of the network to put an end to the ‘The Late Show’, managers had expressed concern about the costs of the show in recent weeks, according to two people who were familiar with the business, and held a definitive judgment to have the host’s hosted and other Late-Night programs. One of these people says that managers did not want to force a wage reduction or call for a trims among the staff of the show, and could not look away from falls in advertising support for the entire format.

There were reasons for it. In 2018, advertisers committed around $ 439 million to five late night shows on broadcast TV – “Late Show” and “Late Late Show” on CBS; “Tonight” and “Late Night” on NBC; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on ABC – according to Directive, a tracker of advertisements. By 2024, those dollars fell 49.8% to $ 220.6 million. The Coronavirus Pandemie and a Hollywood Labor strike, both of which forced the programs to reduce production, and the replacement of “Late Late Show” by “After Midnight”, a cheaper replacement, contributed to the AD deficits.

But the exodus of young people from Linear TV also has. Late-Night has long given the order that advertisements and top premiums of advertisers want to reach people between the ages of 18 and 34. Now that cohort is more used to watching and passing on clips of the programs the morning after being broadcast. That makes the shows increasingly difficult to earn.

CBS’s relationship with Colbert has remained strong, according to the two people who are familiar with the situation. Network managers had a lot of attention to his ability to go beyond a Rocky “Late Show” and to concentrate on discussing the news of the day, booking personalities in the news and the usual Coterie of TV and movie stars and to ride the concept to become the most viewed late-night program on broadcast TV. “Late Show” had not triumphed “NBCs” “Tonight” in that area since David Letterman launched the CBS program in 1993.

As a result, CBS jacket treated a lot on its predecessor. Letterman was not always eager to accept projects for placing products or to produce sitcoms or game shows, and CBS respected the decision because of his status. The network felt the same about jacket. And yet Rivals picked up much more of these projects, such as a bar sponsored by Anheuser-Busch and Heineken who had a prominent place at James Corden’s “Late Late Show”. Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Host programs such as NBC’s “Password” or ABCs “Who Want A Millionaire”. Kimmel has long been embracing commercials in Show and Fallon participates in an advertising deal with Ford Motor Co. These “extras” help the network and make the host more a full-time “ambassador”, according to a person familiar with the mechanics of the Late-Night television.

Certainly, two people who are familiar with the case say that the jacket-CBS relationship was never tense, and note that Colbert eagerly took the extra tasks that suggested the network. He helped launch a special of comic sports built around Pickleball, took a hand in producing “After Midnight” and promoting his young host, Taylor Tomlinson. And Colbert and others launched programs such as ‘Our Cartoon President’, an animated program for adults that played on CBS Sibling Showtime. Colbert’s Spartina Production Outlet hit a three-year First-Look Deal with CBS in 2021.

A lot has been made about potential concerns that are linked to the humor of Colbert, who has often played President Donald Trump and Republicans. Paramount seemed extremely sensitive to such things in recent weeks, thanks to the recent decision to pay $ 16 million to arrange what many legal experts said that a thin legal case had been submitted by Trump about the way an interview was edited by CBS News ’60 minutes’. Colbert called the payment a “thick bribery” on his broadcast on Monday “Late Show”. There are also internal concerns that Skydance Media, which is expected to acquire Paramount in the coming weeks, tilts more conservently in his political views.

The timing of CBS created heavy optics. The Writers Guild of America called on the Attorney General from New York on Friday to ‘start a study into potential misconduct at Paramount’, with reference to ‘important concerns that’ the Late Show ‘is a bribery, so that freedom of expression sacrifices Curry Favor at the Trump administration. “

And although the decision seems to be a recovery for Colbert’s comment, managers were not willing to make a move in May, while they could have used it to win extra advertising support in the annual “in advance” advertising sale of the industry, according to two people who are familiar with the issue. And they didn’t want to make it without talking directly to Colbert – something they didn’t want to do while he was on vacation.

But they couldn’t wait for, for example, the start of the next TV season. Late-night writers and producers usually sign deals for a year who keep them on a show of a show from one August to the next. If contracts associated with the programming cycle of 2025-2026 went to agents around this time, they would only keep people employed until May. CBS leaders knew that the news of the decision would leak – and quickly. So they had to move.

In a sign that the two parties can still get along with each other, Colbert is not pulled out of the blue, as a host could be if they stumble network sensitives, two people who are familiar with the relationship. Colbert and employees will receive another ten months in the air, probably free to go out under their own steam and to burn the humor audience.

CBS will sacrifice a lot if the “late show” drops. It has been a signature program that encourages regular network views, and the 29% of all advertising dollars spent on the Late-Night Shows in 2024, according to the directive. “Late Show” is also one of the best CBS programs for Advertising range, according to advertising company ISpot, behind Sunday NFL broadcasts, “The Price Is Right”, “The Young & The Restless” and “Let’s close a deal.”

Nevertheless, NBC continues to capture the majority of the late-night advertising dollars, with Fallon who lures 33%, or $ 79 million, and Meyers who won 11%, or $ 26.2 million, according to the directive. The advertisement of “Late Show” in 2024 was $ 70.2 million – more than the ABC program of Jimmy Kimmel, but less than that of Fallon. There is a feeling that part of the commentary from Colbert ‘Late Show’ makes something that some advertisers prefer to avoid – just like some people do when it comes to traditional news programs.

All this math was not added to CBS. And the Exit of Colbert will put more pressure on other hosts and others to collect the support from Madison Avenue. Jon Stewart, who meets the Paramount Sibling Comedy Central of CBS, is, according to people who are familiar with the issue of year to year and it can be left to Skydance to decide what to do with “Daily Show”. Fallon and Meyers have deals that keep them at NBC until 2028. Kimmel has a deal that will hold him at ABC until 2026, and one person who is familiar with his thinking says that the host is closer to the end of his term of office than the beginning after work since 2003.

Talk shows of wee hours have had surgery for decades that the hosts served as soft entertainers who could help the audience to sleep after a light chatter, witty conversation and a few famous encounters. In the current era, however, the comedians in the center of the shows are more delusions than ever. They do social media hits, external programs, promotional deals. And they have fun in an increasingly worrying news cycle that is connected to fierce politics.

With all that event, the shows may be less able to overcome that they were made to stop: insomnia.
