‘I don’t want to reconcile’ with my parents

Beckham’s family feud has gone from tabloid fascination to a burning Hollywood scandal.

Brooklyn Beckham published a lengthy statement to his Instagram Stories on Monday morning, accusing his parents, David and Victoria, of trying to “control the narratives surrounding his life” and “endlessly trying to ruin his relationship with his wife Nicola Peltz.” The elder Beckham has been estranged from his family for about three years, a painful saga involving Instagram unfollows and endless press leaks that have overshadowed the public profiles and work of everyone involved since the beginning.

“I have remained silent for years and have done everything I can to keep these matters private,” Beckham wrote. “Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about just some of the lies that have been printed. I do not want to reconcile with my family. I am not being controlled, I am standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”

A representative for David Beckham had no comment. Representatives for Victoria Beckham did not immediately respond to a request from Variety. The family dynamic Brooklyn Beckham alleged in his confessional social media post paints a very unflattering portrait of his father and siblings. Victoria Beckham gets the worst of it, accused of momzilla behavior that immediately begs the question: “Ryan Murphy adaptation, when?” in Hollywood these days.

Beckham accused his parents of posting “countless lies” in the media about him and his family. He described his relationships with his parents and siblings as “inauthentic,” supported by “performative social media posts” and family events.

Beckham also claimed that his parents did everything they could to curb his relationship with Peltz. He said his mother “cancelled the making of Nicola’s dress at the eleventh hour” and “tried to bribe” him into giving up the rights to his name before he got married.

On his wedding day, Beckham said his mother hijacked his first dance with Peltz and danced on him “very inappropriately.”

He recalled: “Marc Anthony called me to the stage where my roving dance with my wife was scheduled to take place, but instead my mother was waiting to dance with me. She danced on me very inappropriately in front of everyone. I have never felt so uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life.”

He ended his statement by saying that the narrative that his wife controls his life is “completely backwards,” and that it is instead his parents who have manipulated him. These are the kind of gems that can derail press tours for companies like Victoria’s eponymous fashion brand, and tarnish a complicated Beckham legacy that has seemingly remained with the family, anchored in a bubble of adoration and patronage.

“My wife and I do not want a life shaped by images, the press or manipulation,” he concluded. “All we want is peace, privacy and happiness for us and our future family.”
