Hud adds $ 2.2 million to Vash program for Indian veterans
Vash offers “rental aid to Indian veterans who – or who run the risk of becoming homeless in tribal communities throughout the country,” said Hud’s announcement.
The funds are “now available for subsidies to support the expansion of rental assistance for Indian veterans that are eligible,” the department added. Tribes and tribal designated housing tents (TDHES) are invited to request benefits via a dedicated form.
“It was informative and inspiring to see how Oneida Tribal Leadership serves their members, also through housing and Wrap-Around services to create economic opportunities and paths towards self-supply for Indian families,” Turner said.
“Since about a decade, the Oneida-Stam Hud-Vash has used to support native American veterans with a specialized set of tools and resources. Today’s announcement will help to expand this impactful program to more Indian veterans throughout the country.”
Turner also described the role that HUD-Vash played for national tribal communities.
“In addition to our partners at the Veteran Affairs Department of the United States (VA), The HUD-Vash program offers tailor-made services by combining Hud’s Housing Voucher rental help with case management and clinical services provided by the VA, “he said.
“The Tribal Hud-Vash program currently houses more than 500 veterans in 29 tribal communities in our big country. More than 1,000 veterans have been operated since the foundation of the program.”
Tehassi Hill, chairman of the Oneida Nation, added that the collaboration of the tribe with HUD dates from the early sixties.
“Throughout the country, unfulfilled needs remain on reservations and projects such as Vash Move Tribes closer to closing the gap,” Hill said. “We are happy that Secretary Turner came to Oneida for an experience of first -hand and a tour of our housing community.”
