How to die only canceled in Hulu; Star Natasha Rothwell is ‘bewildered’
“How to Die Alone”, the comedy series made by and with Natasha Rothwell, was canceled after a season at Hulu.
The series from Onyx Collective, a brand Disney content that produces projects made by People of Color and from under -represented communities. Onyx gave “How To Die Alone” a recorder in November 2022 before he released it in September 2024.
In a statement to VarietyRothwell wrote that she is “shocked, deeply sad and frankly, bewildered” in the decision of Onyx. Although a source close to the studio indicates that viewers was not strong enough to renew “How to Die Alone”, Rothwell claims that it was “an unmistakably critical, creative and awarded success.” The series indeed reached a 91% on rotten tomatoes, with Variety‘s Review calls it’ professionally manufactured ‘and Rothwell’s performance’ flawless’. It also won the Independent Spirit Award for Ensemble Cast in a new script series and has three hanging nominations for NAACP Image Awards.
In her explanation, Rothwell indicated that she shops “How to who only” on other platforms, writing: “Representation is not only about visibility – it is about ensuring that our stories, our existence and our cultural contributions are not deleted . ”
While the official logline is: “How to who only” played Rothwell as Mel, “a broke, thick, black JFK Airport -employee who has never been in love and forget how to dream, until a casual brush with death hair on a journey To a trip to take finally and start to live in all possible ways. Rothwell is best known for the leading role in HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’. She played Belinda and earned an Emmy nomination for season 1 and repeats the role in season 3, which will premiere on February 16. She also played Kelli while writing and directing HBO’s “Insecure” and previously wrote for “Saturday Night Live”.

I am shocked, deeply sad and honestly, bewildered that Onyx has decided not to continue with a second season of “How to Die Alone”. This is a difficult reality to accept because the show is unmistakably critical, creative and awarded success.
This show took me eight years to bring to life, and if there is one thing that I learned at the time, it is resilience. I don’t give up. My team and I are dedicated to finding “How to Die Only” a new home because these kinds of stories.
Now more than ever, television that reinforces unprecedented voices, and that prioritizes renting and casting decisions that accurately reflect the diversity of the world is essential.
