How production designer built gala in two weeks

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers for season 2, part 2 of “Wednesday”, Streaming now on Netflix.
“Wednesday” production designer Mark Scruton was commissioned to his greatest effort so far: creating the look for a lush fundraising gala.
But it was not a gala. It was one for NeverMore Academy. At the start of season 2, the school for Social Outcasts burden a new director with Steve Buscemi who plays Barry Dort. One of the first things he plans to do a gala event, and he wants Morticia’s (Catherine Zeta Jones) mother, Grandmama Frump (Joanna Lumley). “We wanted to surpass what we were doing last season and do something that was so different,” says Scruton.
The directive by director Tim Burton in Scruton was “going to the city” and do something big and lush, but keeps it grounded. Scruton says: “I think the scenes are so well written in terms of how the characters are and what happens. The sets almost design themselves because you just sit down and you understand what you should give to let that scene come to life.”
Adding the challenge was time and space. Scruton explains: “24 hours before we started building the Galaball Hall, we had a huge forest in where the sword fighting with Morticia and Wednesday had taken place.” Scruton and his team had a weekend to remove the trees, mud, dirt and dikes. “Within 48 hours we were there in the large canal for our gala and wheels in the huge arches that we had made somewhere else.”
In terms of design, he was inspired by the opera world, which used large pieces of hand -painted landscapes to make the set larger. “That was my key to the entire set. We took large elements of the Venetian architecture, and then we just literally painted them on these large canvas arches.”
In addition, the Scruton team built a gondola that had to float through the canal. “We had started that set for two weeks, dressed and ready to go.”
The motives of Principal Dort are revealed; He wants the fortune of Grandmama, and he is also unveiled as the brain of the Morning Song Cult. Later Dort Bianca takes hostage, but sets fire to a chandelier in the process.
Ajax jumps in and saves her by turning Dort into stone using his Gorgon skills. However, Dort’s fate is sealed after the chandelier crashes and crushes him. “Outside we have these huge chandeliers, and at first it was meant where that scene happened, and he was crushed on the chandelier outside.”
However, when they got close to the wire, the scene “to an interior scene in the ballroom and we still had to bring a chandelier together to let it work inside.”
Scruton adds: “That was one take. In the end it fell, it made perfect. Everyone was happy and we walked away.”
