HBO’s DC Studios series Cast Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro

The upcoming HBO series “Lanterns” has cast a large DC villain.

Variety has confirmed that Ulrich Thomsen has joined the Green Lanterns series in the recurring role of Sinestro. He will appear in addition to previously announced protagonists Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the series, as well as cast members Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt and Poorna Jagannathan.

According to the official logline, the show “New Recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic agents who get involved in a dark, mystery-based mystery while they are investigating a murder in the American inland . ”

Sinestro is an old figure in the Green Lantern world. The character was previously a member of the Green Lantern Corps before he was put out for abuse of power. He originally debuted in the comic books in 1961. He was previously played by Mark Strong in the film ‘Green Lantern’ from 2011 and has been expressed by countless actors in various animation projects over the years.

The official description of the character reads: “Sinestro is ruthless and yet unmistakably charming and is a former green lantern that has become a villain. The manipulative nature of Sinestro drives his constant obsession with his former mentee, Hal Jordan.

During his career, Thomsen was mainly shown in Danish productions, but previously played in American series such as ‘Banshee’ at Cinemax and was shown in other shows such as ‘The Blacklist’, ‘Counterpart’ and ‘The New Pope’. His American film roles include the James Bond film ‘The World is not Enough’ and ‘The International’. He is also known for his leading role in the Danish film “Festen” (“The Celebration”).

“Lanterns” is produced by HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The show was picked up at HBO in June 2024 for eight episodes. Originally intended as an original by Max, the show shifted to HBO as part of a new plan for the delimitation of the content.

“Lanterns” is partly written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. All three serve as executive producers together with James Hawes, where Hawes also directs the first two episodes. Ron Schmidt is also an executive producer. HBO produces in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.

Deadline reported the casting of Thomsen for the first time.
