Google faces EU antitrust complaint over AI Overviews

A group known as the Independent Publishers Alliance has submitted an antitrust complaint to the European Commission on the AI ​​overviews of Google, According to Reuters.

The complaint accuses Google of “Abusing web content for the AI ​​overviews of Google in Google Search, which cause significant damage and continue to cause publishers, including news publishers in the form of traffic, readership and loss of income.”

It also says that unless they are willing to completely disappear from Google search results, publishers “do not have the possibility to report” from their material used in AI entrepreneurs.

It is a little more than a year since Google AI-generated summaries began to add to the top of a few web search results, and despite some early answers that were spectacular off-base, the function continues to expand, until the point where the reportedly causes great traffic decreases for news publishers.

Google said Reuters that “new AI experiences during the search enable people to ask more questions, which creates new opportunities for content and companies to be discovered.” The company also argued that claims about web traffic are often based on incomplete data, and that “sites can obtain and lose traffic for various reasons.”
