‘God of War’ TV Series Shakeup: Showrunner Leaves Amazon Show
Amazon’s ‘God of War’ TV series adaptation starts from scratch.
Variety has confirmed that showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the project. They had reportedly completed multiple scripts for the series, but Amazon and fellow studio Sony Pictures Television decided to go in a different creative direction.
Cory Barlog, creative director of Santa Monica Studio, will remain on board as executive producer, as will Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of Playstation Productions, Yumi Yang of Santa Monica Studio and Roy Lee of Vertigo
Amazon and Sony will now look to hire a new showrunner and put together a new writers’ room to restart the project. The show was originally ordered to series on Amazon Prime Video in 2022.
Based on the hugely popular 2018 video game developed by Santa Monica Studio, the show follows Kratos, the God of War, who, “after banishing himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever” in the Norse realm of Midgard, according to Amazon’s description. “When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets out on a perilous journey with his estranged son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak – his wife’s dying wish. Kratos soon realizes that the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one that will test the bonds between father and son and force Kratos to fight new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.
The show is a co-production between Amazon Studios and Sony Picture Television. Judkins still has an overall agreement with Sony, where he will focus on new developments. He remains showrunner of the series version of “The Wheel of Time” at Prime Video, which is entering its third season.
Deadline first reported that the executive producer is leaving.
