Fawad Khan among judges as ‘Pakistan Idol’ returns

“Pakistan Idol” makes a comeback more than 10 years after the end of the original run, in which production company MHL Global secured the rights of size distributor Fremantle to breathe new life into the singing competition series.

The show will contain a stars-littered jury panel, including actor Fawad Khan, singer Zeb Bangash, Qawwali artist Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Strings Musician Bilal Maqsood. The Revival marks a considerable return for the franchise, which was last broadcast in 2014.

The original “Pakistan Idol” premiered on Geo Entertainment in December 2013 and ended in April 2014 with Lahore singer Zamad Baig who claims the title. That season, assessed by Bushra Ansari, Hadiqa Kiani and Ali Azmat, generated considerable viewer involvement, culminating in a record of 1 million votes cast during the final.

Geo TV had initially acquired the Idol format rights in 2007, but was confronted with production removements due to logistics challenges. The network launched the show six years later as the 50th international adjustment of the British “Pop Idol” format.

MHL Global is planning an ambitious distribution strategy for the reboot, where the show is broadcast simultaneously in five television networks – a first for every “idol” franchise worldwide. According to the company, this multi-platform approach is intended to reach a diverse audience in the different regions and languages of Pakistan.

“Our collaboration with Fremantle on Pakistan Idol marks an important step forward for the creative and entertainment industry of Pakistan,” said Zoya Merchant, director of MHL Global. “This launch represents more than entertainment – it is a cultural movement. Pakistan has an incredible musical talent, and this platform will not only bring it to the attention nationally, but to elevate it to the world stage.”

The production will contain modern digital engagement in addition to traditional television broadcast. Online auditions are launched through the starting platform, while personal casting calls are planned for large cities and remote regions.

Production is expected to start later this year, with temporary employment data and premiere dates that must be announced.
