More than a decade after the hit film came out, a Happy Gilmore sequel is finally in the works.

Netflix announced in May 2024 that there would be one Happy Gilmore 2of Adam Sandler reprise his role.

Released in 1996, the cult classic followed the story of a failed ice hockey player (Sandler) who discovered a talent for golf and entered a golf tournament to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure. The sports comedy also starred alongside Sandler Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Carl Weathers, Allen Covert, Kevin Nealon, Peter Kelamis, Richard Kiel, Dennis Dugan, Joe Flaherty, Jared Van Snellenberg, Robert Smigel, Will Sasso, Lee Trevino, Bob Barker, Verne Lundquist, Mark Lye, David Kaye, Ian Boothby, Alice Dinnean And Ben Stiller.

In March 2024, McDonald, who played Sandler’s nemesis Shooter McGavin in the film, previously said that Happy Gilmore 2 was under development.

‘Here’s a quick bit of information. I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he said to me, ‘McDonald. You’re going to love this,” he said in an interview on 92.3 “The Fan” in Cleveland at the time. “I said, ‘What?’ And he says, ‘What about that? And he shows me a first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

At the end of the 1996 film, Happy Gilmore (Sandler) uses a trick shot to win the Tour Championship, the gold jacket, and ultimately reclaim his grandmother’s house.

Who will star in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’?

When the sequel was confirmed in May 2024, Netflix shared that Sandler was expected to reprise his role. Three months later, Sandler confirmed and shared the news Travis Kelce would also join him in the film.

“The whole thing was to hang out with Travis. That’s why we put it together,” Sandler said of the film on an August 2024 episode of Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. ‘We’re going there [to New Jersey]. Travis, by the way, thanks, I heard you talking [Happy Gilmore 2] on your show, guys.”

The comedian teased that he had a special role in mind for the NFL star, but ultimately they decided not to go in that direction.

“We were talking about you playing my son while we were writing it literally six months ago,” Sandler continued. “We were like, imagine if Travis was my first baby, how funny that would be. Just an idiot.”

Netflix announced this that same month Julie Bowen And Christopher McDonald will return for the sequel. “Shooter McGavin and Virginia Venit, please report to the green,” Netflix wrote via X while announcing the news. A few minutes later, the streaming service announced Bad bunny would also join the cast.

While Netflix has not yet revealed any details about what the plot of the sequel will be, Sandler said he has already been working on the script.

“We been jammin’ and [writing],” he further shared “The Dan Patrick Show” in April 2024. “We already have a million ideas, we just have to make it into a movie and make sure we’re excited about people enjoying it. We love Happy Gilmore. We don’t want to disappoint anyone.”
