Eva Longoria left ‘dystopian’ America and will not return: ‘It’s a scary place’
Eva Longoria decided to leave the US during the Covid pandemic, and she has no plans to return now that Donald Trump has been elected for a second term as president. She told me Marie Clarie be for November cover story that she splits time between homes in Spain and Mexico, and the globalization of entertainment means she doesn’t have to come to Hollywood to shoot her acting projects.
“I’ve had my entire adult life here,” Longoria said of Los Angeles. “But even earlier [the pandemic]it was changing. The atmosphere was different. And then Covid happened, and that pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, it’s not that I want to bash California; it just feels like this chapter in my life is now over.”
“I’m privileged,” Longoria added. “I can escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They will be stuck in this dystopian country, and my fear and sadness are for them.”
Longoria went on the campaign trail this summer to support Kamala Harris for president. She said that when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016, she suffered an existential crisis, explaining: “It was like, ‘Does my vote really matter? Am I really making a difference?’ I was so untethered to the core of what I believe because I truly believed in my soul that the best person wins. And then that happened, and I was like, ‘Oh, wait. The best person doesn’t win. ”
Now that Trump has won a second presidential election, Longoria is no longer surprised. “The shocking thing is not that he won,” she says told Marie Claire two days after Trump’s victory. “It’s that a convicted criminal who radiates so much hate can hold the highest office.”
“I would like our fight to continue,” Longoria said of the future, noting that the US is in a “scary place.” If he keeps his promises, it will be a scary place.”
