Enjoy a perfect port in Porto with American |’s new flights News

Get ready to combine world-famous Port wine cellars with ‘Euro Summer’ adventures thanks to American Airlines’ new service to Porto, Portugal (OPO) in summer 2027. Customers will be served on the airline’s new Airbus A321XLR aircraft and will have the opportunity to take their trip to the next level with the Flagship Suite® experience on this route.

“Porto is exactly the type of new market that the Airbus A321XLR allows us to serve,” Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning Brian Znotins told team members at the airline’s annual leadership conference this week. “While we will have even more new routes to share later this year for summer 2027, we are keen to continue expanding our long-haul network with connections to new destinations including Budapest, Hungary and Prague, launching this summer.”

Porto’s perfect mix for summer holidays
Portugal is an increasingly popular destination for summer travelers. American offers year-round flights to Lisbon (LIS), making OPO an additional complement. In addition to its world-famous port wine, the city also boasts a colorful riverfront, beautiful blue-and-white azulejos tiles, and a robust food scene.

Nearby, the Douro Valley offers a variety of attractions, from centuries-old vineyards for wine lovers looking for tastings, to boat trips on the rivers and even an archaeological park showcasing Portugal’s past thousands of years ago.

An elevated travel experience
American’s flights to Porto will be operated with Airbus A321XLR aircraft. American was the first US airline to take delivery of this versatile aircraft, which entered service with the airline in December 2025. With 20 Flagship Suite® seats, customers in this cabin can get a perfect night’s sleep with new mattress protectors – rolling out on all international long-haul Flagship® Business flights in 2026 – along with a cool-touch double-sided pillow, Bang & Olufsen noise-cancelling headphones, Nest Bedding branded slippers, a duvet, an amenity kit and a privacy door.

On the ground in Philadelphia (PHL), American’s newly opened Flagship® lounge features nearly 12,500 square feet of premium space with panoramic views, chef-inspired dining, a full-service bar, six spa-style shower suites and a variety of seating options, giving customers a tranquil, elevated place to relax before their trip.

In addition to the Flagship Suite® seats, American also offers customers a choice of Premium Economy and Main Cabin seating. Premium Economy seats feature upgraded winged headrests, calf and foot rests and wireless charging. Passengers traveling in both Premium Economy and Main Cabin will also receive hot meals and can enjoy the flight with complimentary seatback entertainment with Bluetooth connectivity.

America’s growing international network
The Airbus A321XLR will enable American to further expand its international network. From next month, the aircraft will launch a new service to Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI), from New York (JFK). This long-haul aircraft is ideally suited for transatlantic flights such as this and will provide American with the opportunity to open new routes, offer longer-term seasonal flights and add frequencies on popular existing routes.

In addition to transatlantic flights, the aircraft will also operate transcontinental flights this summer from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO), and from Boston (BOS) to LAX.
