Ellen Pompeo will not leave ‘Gray’s Anatomy’, because that makes ‘no sense’

Ellen Pompeo has played in “Gray’s Anatomy” since the debut in 2005 and it sounds like she is not going to leave the show quickly.

Although the character of Pompeo, Meredith Gray, has had less screen time since 2022, she recently shared why she is not going to get away from the ABC Medical Drama forever.

“That would not make sense, emotional or financial. The show was streamed more than a billion times in 2024. More than a billion times,” Pompeo explained El País. “The companies that own the show and stream the show earn a lot of money from our images and our voices and our faces.”

“If I completely walked away, everyone could earn 20 years of money from my hard work and I would not earn money,” Pompeo added. “For me it makes no sense that everyone benefits from my hard work. And emotionally the show means a lot to people. I want to have an attitude of gratitude compared to the show.”

Made by Shonda Rhimes and Michelle Lirtzman, “Grey’s Anatomy” has performed 444 episodes from 10 April and is currently in the 21st season.

Elsewhere in the interview, Pompeo discussed why she decided to become a member of the Hulu Limited series ‘Good American Family’.

“Well, this is a limited series, so I’ll not appear again if this character appears,” she said. “I was just looking for something that was very different from Meredith Gray, and this offer presented itself.”
