Elle Fanning, Lorde, Tessa Thompson: LACMA art and film photographs

This year’s LACMA Art+Film gala on Saturday evening once again proved itself to be one of the most famous events of the year in Los Angeles.

Elle Fanning, Kaia Gerber and mother Cindy Crawford, Lorde, Angela Bassett, Cynthia Erivo, Samara Weaving, Benito Skinner, Tessa Thompson, Emma Roberts and Paris Hilton were among the best dressed of the evening.

The 2025 fundraiser honored “Sinners” filmmaker Ryan Coogler and visual artist Mary Corse. The evening ended with a performance by Doja Cat.

Coogler, presented with his honor by Bassett, gave an emotional speech about his friendship with the late social justice activist Michael Latt, who was shot and killed during a burglary in 2023. Latt was the son of the founder and director of the Sundance Institute’s feature film program Michelle Satter and producer David Latt. “Michael changed the world,” Coogler said.

Coogler also recalled becoming a screenwriter while in college. “I never considered myself an artist. I used to be a football player and was recommended to write screenplays on a whim when I was studying at USC on a football scholarship,” he said.

The “Sinners” filmmaker said he initially felt like he was at his “weakest” and “lowest” when he arrived in Los Angeles because he missed his community in his hometown of Oakland, California. But now, he said, “This place became a second home to me. I made memories here. I made friends here.”

LACMA Art+Film, presented in collaboration with Gucci and co-chaired by “One Battle After Another” stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Eva Chow, supports the art institution’s initiative to make film more central to the museum’s curatorial programming, while funding its broader mission. This includes exhibitions, acquisitions and educational programming, in addition to screenings that explore the intersection of art and film.
