Dubai introduces contactless hotel check-in technology | News

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the UAE, and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, has announced the citywide introduction of a one-time, contactless check-in solution for hotel guests. This initiative sets a new global benchmark for guest convenience, security and innovation in the hospitality sector, and will allow guests to bypass personal check-in procedures once implemented in the city’s hotels and vacation rentals. It represents a significant step forward in achieving the ambitious goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which aims to further consolidate Dubai’s position as a leading global destination for business and leisure.
The groundbreaking biometric and digital technology capabilities, developed by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and available through several independent providers, are now available for immediate integration into hotels and holiday homes across Dubai, allowing guests to enjoy a seamless and expedited arrival experience. The launch underlines Dubai’s commitment to deploy cutting-edge technology to further strengthen its position as a future global tourism destination, prioritizing both guest satisfaction and operational excellence, and is in line with D33’s focus on digital transformation and smart city initiatives.
This innovative system allows guests to complete all check-in formalities directly from their mobile phone before arrival. Uploading essential identification documentation and biometric data once streamlines the entire process, significantly reducing or eliminating traditional check-in times. Upon arrival, guests at participating hotels can bypass the usual check-in counter formalities at the start of each stay. The securely stored data will then remain valid until the identification document expires, meaning that only quick authentication, for example via facial recognition, would be required on subsequent visits. Repeat visitors make up almost a quarter of total annual visits to Dubai, and this new service welcomes them to the city with added convenience, consolidating their affinity with the destination.
Enabling sustainable growth
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan said: “Guided by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, our city continues to lead the way in embracing innovation and creating unparalleled experiences. By leveraging cutting-edge solutions, we are not only improving visitors’ journeys, but also strategically positioning Dubai for sustainable tourism growth. The rollout of this aligns perfectly with the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33. technology is a evidence of our vision for a smart, seamless and safe urban environment and reflects our commitment to further consolidate Dubai’s position as a leading global destination for business and leisure.”
His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), added: “The introduction of this one-time contactless check-in solution for the entire city is a pivotal moment for Dubai’s hospitality sector and a clear demonstration of our progress in achieving the goals of the D33 agenda. Furthermore, it demonstrates the transformative power of collaboration between the public and private sectors in Dubai, delivering benefits to stakeholders and visitors alike. Led by the visionary leadership of our city, we continue to pursue opportunities to facilitate the continued growth of the city’s tourism ecosystem and further enhance its critical contribution to the emirate’s economy.”
Significant potential
The solution is designed for easy integration into existing hotel apps or web platforms, ensuring a smooth transition for participating establishments. In addition to the immediate benefits, the technology has significant potential to be deployed across other tourism touchpoints, such as car rental, paving the way for a more integrated and customized visitor experience across the city. It also builds on the integration of smart technology at the destination, including the introduction of smart tunnels at Dubai International Airport, which has reduced processing time at passport control to just seconds.
Dubai’s hospitality sector has been one of the cornerstones of its growth as a global destination, with world-class facilities and service in 820 hotels and hotel apartments across the city. Complementing Dubai’s broader offering, it has helped the city reach new heights, welcoming 15.70 million international overnight visitors in the first ten months of 2025, an increase of 5% year-on-year, with guests spending a total of 36.71 million room nights in hotels across the emirate.
