Talk about highway robberies! A London man was fined four times for leaving his car in a disabled parking space… but it turned out the area around his car had been painted while he was out of town!
The owner of the vehicle said this BBC he couldn’t even enjoy his trip last month… because he could see him collecting fines through a CCTV camera aimed at tricking his car.
When he returned from his ruined holiday, he found 2 tickets on the windshield, while 2 others had been inexplicably removed by an unknown passer-by. Thanks for nothing!
He said, “I couldn’t do anything.”
But don’t worry, he doesn’t actually have to pay the fines… probably. The responsible council – clearly not good communicators – has still not informed him directly one way or another. They apparently responded to a video he posted online, but failed to send an official notice.
But how did this happen in the first place?
A council spokesperson said: “Our road markings contractor painted lines for a new disabled space on November 17, following a request from a resident. The contractor painted around a car as usual, otherwise they would have to wait for the space to become available, which could take weeks.”
They added: “The contractor took a photo of the car so we knew not to fine the owner. Unfortunately one of our parking attendants was unaware and issued parking fines. However, these were not processed into fines as we had a note in the system from our contractor. The tickets were canceled a week before the video was uploaded to social media and we have apologized for the confusion.”
Still, the person who requested the accessible parking noted that residents should have been given a warning.
“It’s the same as an extension or other road work: you let people know,” he said. “Without some communication with your community, that’s the wrong way to do it.”
