Dick Cheneythe 46th vice president to serve alongside the Republican president George W Bush – who was an architect in the American ‘War on Terror’ – has died.
He died of complications from pneumonia and cardiovascular disease, his family said in a statement.
Cheney struggled with persistent cardiovascular problems for most of adulthood and underwent a heart transplant in 2012.
In a statement released Tuesday morning, his family called him “a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country and to live a life of courage, honor, love, kindness and fly fishing.”
They added…We are extremely grateful for everything Dick Cheney has done for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
Cheny had a decades-long career in politics, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from Wyoming and later being appointed White House chief of staff to President Gerald Ford.
He also served as Secretary of Defense under President George HW Bush before becoming his son’s vice president.
Cheny is considered one of the most powerful veeps in history, having shaped the Bush administration’s foreign policy – most notably by advocating the US invasion of Iraq after the September 11 attacks.
During his “Meet the Press” interview just five days after the September 11 terrorist attacks, he famously said that any country, including Afghanistan, that “provides sanctuary to terrorists” “will face the full wrath of the United States.”
He attracted attention during the 2024 presidential elections, when he now declared himself president Donald Trump a threat to the republic and supported democrat Kamala Harris.
He was 84 years old.
