‘Cold Summer’ sells to Walter -Gifts in the US and Canada

Beta film has closed a large deal on the Mafia series “Cold Summer” with Walter Presents for the US and Canada, prior to the linear premiere in the UK at Channel 4 on April 13, whereby the box set was also made available at the streaming service. It was sold earlier this year to SBS Australia.

The series broke records on its home grass in RAI Italy, premiered with peak viewers with 4.6 million and a remarkable 23% market share, which by far surpasses the median of the channel. It was nominated for two Italian film prizes, known as the Nastri d’Agento, in the best crime series and leading actor categories.

The eight-part series, which was adapted from the novel by former anti-Mafia officer of Justice Gianico Carofiglio, takes place in the early 90s in southern Italy and looks at an uncomfortable alliance between a small mafia boss and a sincere police sergeant, Pietro Fenoglio.

Fenoglio can practically smell the Mafia War that is about to explode in the resort of Bari, Apulia. Yet nobody else can completely believe that the Mafia cocaine has followed from tough Sicily to sleepy Apulia, the least of all rejecting Bari Police Chief, who is reprimanding Pietro for his Maverick approach to detective work.

While Pietro starts a determined chase to eradicate the emerging mafia-down of the city, his marriage with his long-suffering woman falls apart. But when the ruthless Mafia boss Nicola Grimaldi discovers that his young son has been abducted and murdered, the suspect and the former friend of Grimaldi Vito are resorting to the police. This collaboration with the Quicksilver Informant unintentionally leads Pietro in a dark underworld, and notes that in this case law enforcement officers may not differ much from the legislative breakers.

The series plays Alessio Boni (“Caravaggio”), Paolo Sassanelli and Giulia Vecchio (“Trust”), three of the most appreciated actors in Italy. It is directed by Alessandro Casale, made by Gianico Carofiglio, Doriana Leondeff, Antonio Leotti and Oliviero del Papa, and produced by Clemart for Rai Fiction in association with Beta Film. Beta film also deals with international sales.
