‘Chicago Med’ boss on the baby, future and other father’s options of Hannah and Dean

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers from the episode of Wednesday 1 October of “Chicago Med”.
It is official: Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) and Dean Archer (Steven Weber) get a baby. The premiere of the season 11 of “Chicago Med” took immediately after the events of the final of season 10, where Hannah appeared at Dean’s door to tell him that she was expecting, and he is the father.
Although Dean and Hannah have had a flirty atmosphere for the past five seasons, viewers have never seen it acting. That was of course also due to her on-from-relationship with Ripley (Luke Mitchell). The cliffhanger was wondered if Ripley or possibly Dean could be the father, but there was also a third option.
“We had three possible fathers in that scenario. Ripley, Archer and the third. We have not talked about this for long, but we were talking about the doorway, it is Will Halstead,” says Showrunner Allen MacDonald tells Variety. “That would be the first time we would see Will Halstead for a long time.”
Nick Ghlfuss, who for eight years Halstead played before he left the show in 2023, will be back in the second episode, but not because of Hannah. Instead, viewers get an update on where he is with Natalie (Torrey Devitto); Although she will not be in the episode, Halstead will be back in the city with her son, Owen.

In the end, MacDonald decided that making the father of Archer ‘the most interesting and fruitful ground for telling stories’ create dramatically’, because their friendship has grown that way. He explains that the couple slept together at the end of ‘The Book of Archer’, the 17th episode of season 10, when Hannah appeared with Dean’s with dinner and dessert.
“Jesse and Steven both played beautifully the aftermath of it,” he says. “It’s like” the sixth sense. ” You can go back and look, and you can see it.
(Going back and looking at episode 18, When Hannah and Ripley start to hold a discussion, Dean is shown to give the couple the side eye, possibly a little jealousy.)
Until now, the audience has never seen the two kiss – “They have always been friends with a bit of an atmosphere that they don’t even recognize or deny,” explains MacDonald – and there are no plans to show the night that they came together through flashbacks.
“The reason the off-camera was because we wanted to keep the surprise,” he says. “As a fan I am not going to lie. I wanted to see that, but it just seemed that the surprise when she appeared at his door, and the surprise of the confirmation in the premiere was the best choice.”
Weber jokes: “I don’t think anyone wants to see that”, but adds: “There is a whole season to continue. Where the story goes from, it is up and down. I would not surprise if there is a show of affection. It will be earned, not just a kind of TV romanticism.”
As for what the next is, the duo “decided to keep becoming friends” after their connection, and now everything has changed, says MacDonald. “Now she is pregnant. How is that going to influence their relationship? Go on, will they stay friends? Are they even getting along with each other? Is it going to be a problem between them? How does it influence their feelings? But somehow it will shake things between them.”
The Hannah storyline marks the first time that a series of regular first responder on a “one chicago” show will have an apparently positive pregnancy arc. In the past decade, the franchise has several miscarriages and fertility problems, as well as couples choose to adopt.
“It is a lot to ask for an actor, because it means at a very basic level that Jesse will get a prosthetic to her, and it will get bigger and bigger as the season continues. It is difficult. It is difficult. It is not the first TV writer who says this, but it is the right way to do it,” MacDonald says. “Macdonald says.” Macdonald says. “Macdonald says.” Jesse was completely on board. It will be difficult for her for that part, but it is something we intend to continue. “
‘Chicago Med’, produced by Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment, will be broadcast on NBC Wednesday at 8 p.m. et.
